Suzuki Electrifies New Zealand Market with e Vitara, Backed by Expanded Warranty
Suzuki New Zealand has launched its first fully electric vehicle, the e Vitara, alongside a significant upgrade to its vehicle warranty program. The move signals a commitment to electrification and enhanced customer confidence, though pricing for the e Vitara may test the brand’s traditionally value-conscious customer base.
The e Vitara, jointly developed with Toyota, arrives in two variants: a 2WD model priced at $56,990 and an AWD “Allgrip-e” version at $64,990. Suzuki is currently offering introductory pricing of $54,990 for the 2WD and $62,990 for the AWD, though the duration of this offer remains unspecified. The vehicle is built in India and represents the largest Suzuki model ever produced, though only marginally larger than the outgoing Vitara hybrid.
The launch is coupled with a substantial expansion of Suzuki’s warranty coverage. Effective from April, all new Suzuki vehicles will be covered by an 8-year/160,000km warranty, a considerable improvement over the previous 3-year/100,000km offering. Maintaining the warranty requires adherence to authorized Suzuki service schedules.
Both e Vitara models utilize a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The 2WD variant delivers a range of 426km and produces 128kW of power and 189Nm of torque, accelerating to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds. The AWD model offers a slightly reduced range of 395km but boasts increased power – 135kW and 300Nm – achieving a 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds. DC fast charging takes approximately 45 minutes to reach 80% capacity.
Suzuki has equipped the e Vitara with a high level of standard specification, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a “floating” centre console, a 7-speaker Infinity sound system with a subwoofer, 12-colour ambient lighting, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and a customizable 10.25-inch digital instrument panel. Physical switchgear is retained for climate control, a feature Suzuki highlights as a benefit.
Safety features include seven airbags and a four-star Euro NCAP rating. While Suzuki anticipates a similar rating from ANCAP for the Australasian market, this falls short of the five-star ratings achieved by key competitors like the Kia EV3 and Toyota bZ4X, potentially giving some buyers pause.
The e Vitara’s pricing places it in a competitive segment. At its introductory price, the 2WD model is closely positioned against the BYD Atto 3 Superior, which offers a comparable range and faster DC charging capabilities. Suzuki NZ expects to sell around 450 units of the e Vitara in its first year, with approximately three-quarters of sales anticipated to be the 2WD variant.
The introduction of the e Vitara and the expanded warranty represent a significant step for Suzuki New Zealand as it navigates the evolving automotive landscape. The company is targeting 450 sales in 2026, signalling a cautious but optimistic outlook for its first electric model. The success of the e Vitara will likely hinge on its ability to balance its premium pricing with the brand’s reputation for value and reliability.
