Sweden to Deploy Troops to Latvia, Strengthening NATOS Eastern Flank
Latvia will welcome a Swedish mechanized infantry battalion, bolstering NATO’s presence in the Baltic region.
In a move that underscores NATO’s commitment to collective defense, Sweden’s parliament approved a proposal on December 12th to contribute a battalion of up to 600 troops to the NATO multinational brigade in Latvia.this marks the first time Sweden will deploy troops to another NATO member state since joining the alliance in April 2024.”Sweden’s participation in the NATO multinational brigade in Latvia will substantially contribute to the security of the Baltic Sea region adn NATO’s collective defense,” said Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds. “The increased number of allied troops on our territory sends a clear message to Russia that NATO is ready to defend every inch of its territory.”
The Swedish troops are expected to arrive at the Ādaži military base in early 2025.
Latvia’s multinational brigade currently comprises forces from 13 NATO allies: Albania, Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Canada, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and spain.This deployment is part of a broader effort to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. At the 2022 Madrid Summit, Canada and Latvia signed a joint declaration to enhance the defense of the alliance’s eastern border. A three-phase roadmap was afterward developed, culminating in the official establishment of the brigade in july 2024. This upgrade from a NATO battlegroup to a brigade significantly increases the alliance’s presence in Latvia.
