Hochfilzen,Austria - Swedish biathlon star Hanna Öberg has withdrawn from the upcoming World cup races in Annecy,France,citing ongoing health issues. The 29-year-old, who hails from Kiruna, Sweden, will be replaced by Johanna Skottheim.
“I’m not where I need to be to be satisfied with my performance,” Öberg explained in a statement to Swedish television SVT. “It’s a setback for me. I’m not at all where I want to be. It’s clear that I need to do something differently. I’ve never reacted to a cold like this during competitions before.”
Öberg’s struggles appear to stem from a cold she contracted at the beginning of the season. While she started the year strong with a relay victory in Kontiolahti, Finland, she has since faced difficulties.
She departed Hochfilzen after the sprint race, missing the concluding relay. “At this level, you need to be in top form, otherwise it’s not worth it,” said swedish national team coach Johannes Lukas, explaining Öberg’s absence.
Öberg’s withdrawal is a blow to the Swedish team, who were hoping for a strong showing from their star athlete.
