Jasmine Paolini, the second seed, battled past Leylah Fernandez 7-6(8), 7-6(6) in a round of 16 showdown at the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday. Fernandez fought off four match points in the dramatic encounter.
Paolini secured the first set in a tiebreak, saving a set point at 5-4 and ultimately clinching it 10-8 after a grueling 26-shot rally. The Italian tennis player appeared headed for a straight-sets victory with a 5-2 lead in the second, but Fernandez, representing Canada, rallied, saving a match point with an ace.
Paolini faced more match points at 6-5, but Fernandez saved all three, forcing another tiebreak. Fernandez took a 6-4 lead in the breaker, but Paolini held her nerve, saving two set points before finally securing the win on her fifth match point.
