Paolini⁣ secured the first set in‍ a tiebreak, saving a set point at 5-4 and ultimately clinching it 10-8 after ​a grueling 26-shot rally. The Italian tennis ‍player appeared headed for a straight-sets victory with⁣ a 5-2 lead in the second, but Fernandez, representing Canada, rallied, saving a match point with an ace.

Paolini faced more match ‍points at 6-5, but Fernandez saved ‌all ​three, forcing another tiebreak.⁣ Fernandez took a 6-4 lead ​in the breaker, but Paolini held her nerve, saving two set points before finally‍ securing the win on her fifth match point. Despite converting onyl 5 of ‍17 break points, Paolini earned her ⁣first‍ grass-court victory⁣ of the season after a 2 1/2-hour match.
