Updated June 28, 2025
BAD HOMBURG, Germany – Iga Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, showcased her dominance Friday, defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-1, 6-3 to secure a spot in the Bad Homburg Open final. The victory keeps Swiatek in contention for her first title on grass.
Jessica Pegula will play the role of Swiatek’s opponent in the final. Pegula battled through a tough match against Linda Noskova, ultimately winning 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-1.
Swiatek, previously ranked No. 1 in the world, demonstrated her readiness for Wimbledon, which begins next week. She overpowered Paolini, who reached the Wimbledon final last year.
“I am super happy and I was not expecting this,” Swiatek said after her victory. “I just did my job and I knew what I wanted to play and I went for it.”
Swiatek added, “I’m happy I kept the momentum going until the end of the match. Jasmine, you can’t let her get back in the game because she’s a fighter. I just wanted to go for it, and go for my shots.” Swiatek holds a 5-0 advantage in head-to-head matchups against Paolini.
Before Bad Homburg, Swiatek, a four-time French Open champion and one-time U.S.Open winner, opted for a week of training in Mallorca, skipping other grass tournaments this season.
Swiatek quickly took control of the first set, winning it in 29 minutes with three breaks. While the pair traded breaks early in the second set, Paolini struggled to hold serve against Swiatek’s aggressive play, falling behind 4-2.
Swiatek clinched the match with a forehand winner on her third match point. Pegula, meanwhile, had to fight back after dropping the first set to Noskova.
Noskova led 5-4 in the second set before Pegula rallied, improving her returns and completing the comeback on her third match point. “She was serving really good and I could not get a read on it,” Pegula said. “Then I was able to start reading it. I am happy that I could put myself back in the match.”
Looking ahead to the final, Pegula acknowledged Swiatek’s strengths. “I feel when she is firing on all cylinders, she is really really good,” Pegula said. “That’s why she is a champion and was number one. I hit pretty low and flat and that hopefully could disrupt the rhythm.”
What’s next
