Swinney Backs Action Against Russia: Scots Airports Used in Operation

January 8, 2026 Robert Mitchell - News Editor of Newsdirectory3.com News

First ⁤Minister John ‍Swinney has backed action to enforce sanctions against⁢ Russia following the US ‍seizure of a Russian-flagged vessel‍ off the Scottish coast.

The vessel, which was⁤ carrying Russian ‍fertiliser, was detained at Benbecula Airport in the Outer Hebrides ‍after a request from the US government.Mr Swinney said ⁤the Scottish government‍ woudl “fully ‍co-operate” with the ‌authorities to ensure sanctions where “robustly enforced”.

He added that the incident highlighted the importance of continued international co-operation to hold ⁢russia accountable for⁢ its invasion of Ukraine.

US Navy aircraft landed at Benbecula Airport on Wednesday

The vessel ⁣was seized under powers ‍relating to sanctions imposed on Russia following ‌its invasion ⁣of Ukraine.

The‍ US Justice Department said ‌the vessel had been used to transport‍ military equipment.

The Russian embassy in London has condemned the seizure as an “act of piracy”.

Swinney, speaking to reporters after First Minister’s⁤ Questions, reiterated that military action was ⁣controlled by the UK government, ‍and that he had not been briefed on the operation.

He ⁤said: “If this‍ is a⁤ measure to ⁤enforce agreed sanctions that were being circumvented ‌by⁢ the use of this tanker, then ‍I support⁤ that action.

“Because where sanctions are put in place to tackle the ‍unacceptable illegal behaviour of a state like russia in Ukraine, I ⁣think those sanctions should be enforced.”

BBC Scotland understands that at least three US⁣ Air‍ Force planes took off from RAF Mildenhall ‍in Suffolk and landed at Wick John‌ O’Groats Airport at about 11:00 on Wednesday before leaving at about midday.

US Navy aircraft also flew into Benbecula Airport ⁣on ⁣Wednesday.

The Scottish ⁢Greens had accused the US government of “piracy at sea”, describing Donald Trump’s management⁣ of “increasingly acting like a rogue state”.

but Scottish Secretary⁢ Douglas Alexander told BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast the ship was designated a stateless vessel under international law.

“This ship is part of the ⁤shadow fleet that funds Russia’s war effort in Ukraine,” the minister said.

“As a⁢ UK government and ⁤as‌ the United Kingdom, our national interest is served by⁤ avoiding the illegal⁤ fuelling of terrorism, of conflict and of misery, whether in Ukraine, the Middle East or anywhere else.

“So when we ‌were asked by the United States to provide⁣ operation assistance, including ‌basing ⁣an air surveillance support, we were absolutely willing to ⁤step up.

“I think it is indeed right and reasonable we work with our allies to confront the attempt to sanction bust that we ‌are witnessing from the Russians on a regular basis.”

All British military operations are controlled by the UK government.

The‍ Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is a landmark United States federal law ⁣that aims to‍ lower healthcare costs, address climate change, and raise taxes on large corporations. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on August 16,⁣ 2022, marking a meaningful legislative achievement for his administration.

The Act represents a compromise ‍between the initial, more expansive “Build back Better” plan and the realities of ‌a narrowly divided ‍Congress. It focuses on three key areas: reducing the deficit, ‍lowering prescription drug costs, and investing in ⁣clean energy and ‍climate solutions.

Such as, the‌ Congressional Budget Office (CBO) ‍estimated that the Act would reduce the federal deficit by $300 billion‍ over the next 10 years. CBO Report on the Inflation⁤ Reduction ⁢Act

Healthcare Provisions

The Inflation Reduction Act directly addresses healthcare costs, particularly prescription drug prices. It empowers Medicare to negotiate the prices of certain high-cost drugs, a change long sought by ⁢Democrats.

Specifically,‍ the law allows Medicare to‌ negotiate the ‌prices of 10 drugs ‍starting⁢ in ‍2026, with the number increasing over time. This ‌negotiation power is expected to‍ lower ⁤costs for seniors and reduce government spending. The law also caps out-of-pocket prescription ⁣drug costs ⁣for Medicare beneficiaries at $2,000 per year, beginning in 2025.

According to the Centers for⁤ Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), approximately 55 million Medicare beneficiaries are expected to benefit from the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap.⁤ CMS Fact Sheet: Lowering Health Care Costs

Climate Change and ⁢Energy Security

A substantial portion of the Inflation Reduction Act is dedicated⁣ to combating climate change and ⁤promoting clean⁢ energy. The law provides tax credits, grants, and loan programs to incentivize investments in renewable energy sources, energy ‍efficiency, and electric vehicles.

The Act includes over $369 billion in ‌funding‍ for climate and energy provisions. Thes investments ⁢are projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ⁣roughly 40% below 2005 levels by 2030. Key provisions include tax credits ‌for solar ‍and ‍wind energy, electric vehicle purchases, and home energy efficiency upgrades.

The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the⁣ Inflation ‍Reduction Act will create approximately⁢ 9 million jobs in the clean energy sector over the‍ next decade. DOE Inflation Reduction ⁤act Resources

Tax Provisions and⁣ Revenue

The Inflation‌ Reduction Act aims to raise revenue primarily through increased tax ⁣enforcement and a ⁢15% minimum tax on corporations with⁤ over $1 ⁢billion in profits. These provisions are intended to ensure that ⁣large corporations pay their‍ fair share of taxes.

The law⁣ allocates approximately $80 billion to the Internal⁣ Revenue Service (IRS) for ‌enhanced tax enforcement. This funding is expected ⁣to generate⁤ hundreds of billions of dollars in additional revenue over the next decade by cracking down on tax evasion and ⁤improving tax collection. The 15% corporate minimum tax is designed to prevent profitable companies from avoiding taxes through‌ loopholes and deductions.

The Joint Committee on‍ Taxation estimates that the corporate ⁤minimum tax will generate ‍approximately $35 billion per year. Joint Committee on‍ Taxation⁤ analysis of the Inflation Reduction Act
