Swiss Sparkling Wine Gains Popularity
Swiss Sparkling Wine bubbles Up in Popularity
American consumers are increasingly raising a glass to Swiss sparkling wines, a trend driven by a growing appreciation for quality and local products.
While Champagne and Prosecco remain dominant forces in the sparkling wine market, Swiss producers are carving out a niche for themselves. A recent study by the Swiss Wine Market Observatory reveals a surge in both production and sales of Swiss sparkling wines over the past decade.
In 2023, consumption of imported sparkling wines reached approximately 20 million liters, marking a 30% increase in just ten years.
Domestically, Swiss sparkling wines are also experiencing a boom. Sales of Swiss-made bubbly have jumped nearly 18% in the last five years, outpacing the 10% growth seen in imported sparkling wines.
Young Adults Lead the Fizz Frenzy
This trend is particularly pronounced among younger generations.A survey of 1,141 adults found that over half are willing to pay a premium for Swiss sparkling wine compared to foreign counterparts.
“There’s a strong interest in sparkling wines,” says Alexandre Mondoux, an economics professor at the Changins University of Applied Sciences and co-author of the study. “More than half of the respondents said they would be willing to pay a bit more for Swiss sparkling wine compared to foreign sparkling wine. They are interested in Swiss sparkling wine, and also in cocktails made with Swiss sparkling wine. This trend is stronger among 18-35 year olds, who are interested in innovation, novelty, and local products.”
A Niche Market with Room to Grow
despite this growing popularity, Swiss sparkling wines still represent a small percentage of the overall market. In 2023, they accounted for only 5% of supermarket sales, compared to 56% for Prosecco and 12% for Champagne.
However, with increasing consumer interest and a commitment from Swiss vintners to expand production, Swiss sparkling wines are poised to become a more prominent fixture on American tables.

Jessica: Professor Mondoux, your recent study reveals a significant upward trend in the consumption of Swiss sparkling wines. Can you shed some light on what’s driving this trend?
Professor Mondoux: There’s a definite buzz surrounding Swiss sparkling wines right now, both domestically and internationally. This is fueled by a combination of factors, with growing consumer appreciation for quality and locally-sourced products playing a key role. Young adults, in particular, are showing a strong preference for Swiss sparkling wines, often expressing a willingness to pay a premium for them compared to their imported counterparts.
Jessica: Why do you think Swiss sparkling wines are resonating so strongly with younger consumers?
Professor Mondoux: This generation is drawn to innovation, novelty, and products with a strong story behind them. Swiss sparkling wines tick all those boxes. They offer a unique flavor profile and a sense of discovery. Plus, there’s a growing trend of supporting local producers and valuing sustainably-crafted beverages, which aligns perfectly with the ethos of many Swiss vineyards.
Jessica: The study also highlights a considerable increase in production levels. Do you believe Swiss wineries are equipped to meet the growing demand?
Professor Mondoux: Swiss vintners are definitely rising to the challenge. They are investing in modern techniques and expanding production to cater to the increasing consumer interest. While Swiss sparkling wines still represent a small market share compared to established players like Champagne and Prosecco, the upward trajectory is clear. I anticipate we’ll see Swiss bubbles becoming increasingly prominent on tables around the world in the coming years.
