Switzerland’s Weather Risks: Hail,Floods and Lightning Vary by Canton

Ticino, Jura, and Neuchâtel are particularly vulnerable to hail, along with Nidwalden, Obwalden, Bern, Lucerne, Schwyz, and Fribourg to a lesser extent.Patrick Villiger, head of motor vehicle claims at AXA, noted that severe hailstorms impacting numerous vehicles in short periods drive up claim numbers. Schaffhausen, Geneva, Graubünden, Glarus and Thurgau experiance less hail damage.
Flooding presents another regional challenge. Schwyz has recorded the highest number of flood claims per insured household over the last decade, followed by Thurgau, Solothurn and Lucerne. Vaud, Nidwalden, basel-Country, Graubünden and uri have been relatively unaffected by floods.
Lightning strikes are a major concern in Ticino. AXA reports that households in this canton have filed nearly seven times more claims related to lightning than the rest of Switzerland over the past 10 years. The risk is 26 times higher compared to Basel-Country, Vaud and Geneva.
“The reason is simple: when warm, humid air from the Mediterranean meets the Alps, the resulting updrafts and downdrafts form highly electrically charged clouds, which give rise to lightning,” AXA stated.
