Switzerland’s Weather Risks:‍ Hail,Floods and Lightning Vary by Canton

Updated June 21,2025

Switzerland’s federal structure extends even to ⁣extreme weather, with varying risks across its cantons. A recent analysis by ‌AXA insurance highlights these regional disparities in weather-related claims.

The insurance company’s‌ data, derived from assessing weather damage and claim patterns, reveals that certain cantons face disproportionate risks. Hail damage to vehicles, such as,constitutes a significant portion of claims.

Ticino, Jura, and Neuchâtel are particularly‍ vulnerable to hail, along with Nidwalden, Obwalden, Bern, Lucerne, Schwyz, and Fribourg⁢ to a lesser extent.Patrick Villiger, head of motor vehicle claims at AXA, noted that severe hailstorms impacting numerous vehicles in short periods drive up claim numbers. ‍Schaffhausen,‍ Geneva, Graubünden, Glarus and Thurgau⁢ experiance⁢ less hail damage.

Flooding presents⁢ another regional challenge. Schwyz has‌ recorded the highest number of flood claims per insured household over the last decade, followed by Thurgau,‍ Solothurn and Lucerne. Vaud, Nidwalden, basel-Country, Graubünden and uri have been relatively⁣ unaffected by floods.

Lightning strikes are a major concern in Ticino. AXA reports that ‌households in this canton have filed nearly seven times⁣ more claims⁣ related to lightning than the rest of Switzerland over the past 10‍ years. The risk is ⁢26 times higher‌ compared ⁢to⁢ Basel-Country, Vaud ⁢and Geneva.

“The reason is simple: when warm, humid air from the⁣ Mediterranean meets the Alps, the resulting updrafts and downdrafts form highly ⁤electrically charged clouds, which give rise⁤ to lightning,” AXA stated.

meteoschweiz, Switzerland’s weather service, ‌uses its own⁣ data to ‍identify ⁢regions prone to specific weather events. They confirm that Ticino typically experiences the highest⁢ amounts of⁤ precipitation over short periods due to the southern orographic effect.⁣ In contrast, the Stalden-Ackersand ⁤area in Valais faces the most sustained periods of drought.

While ‍not⁣ weather-related, Valais is the ⁤most earthquake-prone canton⁣ due to its mountainous terrain. ‌Graubünden ‍is also susceptible to earthquakes. Among‍ cities, Basel, Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne and Bern face the greatest earthquake risk, with the potential for significant impact due to their large populations and infrastructure.

What’s next

Residents and businesses should consider these regional weather risks when making insurance and‌ preparedness plans. Understanding the specific threats in each canton is crucial for mitigating⁣ potential damage and ensuring safety.
