Switzerland to Pay ,000 to Victims of Deadly Swiss Bar Fire in Crans-Montana

Switzerland to Pay $91,000 to Victims of Deadly Swiss Bar Fire in Crans-Montana

February 25, 2026 Robert Mitchell News

Crans-Montana, Switzerland – The Swiss government has announced a one-off payment of 50,000 Swiss francs (approximately $91,000 USD) to survivors severely injured and to the families of those who died in the New Year’s bar fire in Crans-Montana. The tragedy, which occurred in the popular ski resort, claimed the lives of 41 people and injured over 100 more.

The payment, described by officials as a “solidarity contribution” and a “gesture of compassion,” aims to provide swift financial support to those most affected by the devastating blaze. In principle, the funds will be distributed to each individual who lost their life and to every person who required hospitalization as a result of the fire.

“The Federal Council shares with the victims and their families the desire for truth and justice,” said Swiss President Guy Parmelin. “We, too, want to know what happened, why, and how it could have been prevented.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire have focused on the use of sparkling candles which reportedly ignited foam soundproofing in the bar’s basement ceiling. Authorities have noted that many of those who perished were teenagers, and a significant number of the victims were foreign nationals, including citizens of France and Italy.

Beyond the immediate financial assistance, the Federal Council is establishing a roundtable to facilitate out-of-court settlements between victims, insurance companies, and relevant authorities. This initiative seeks to streamline the process of compensation and potentially avoid protracted legal proceedings. The government has committed up to 20 million francs to support these settlements.

The government also intends to allocate 8.5 million francs to assist cantons (Swiss administrative regions) in covering extraordinary costs incurred as a result of the disaster. This funding is intended to address the broader impact of the fire on local communities and support services.

The decision to provide this support follows an analysis by the Federal Office of Justice, which identified gaps in existing disaster relief systems. The analysis revealed that current support mechanisms are often geared towards individual cases and are less effective in responding to large-scale tragedies. The government is now seeking parliamentary approval to expedite legislation designed to address these shortcomings and improve disaster preparedness.

The scale of the tragedy prompted a national day of mourning in Switzerland, reflecting the widespread shock and grief felt across the country. The incident has also raised questions about fire safety regulations and inspection protocols, with reports indicating that fire safety inspections at the Moretti bar had lapsed since 2019.

The Federal Council hopes that the proposed legislation will be swiftly approved by parliament, enabling the rapid distribution of funds and the implementation of improved support systems for future disaster relief efforts. The government’s response underscores a commitment to providing both immediate assistance and long-term solutions for those affected by the Crans-Montana bar fire.
