Swiss Tourism Booms: Hotel Stays Reach Record High
Updated June 09, 2025
Switzerland’s popularity as a destination for both work and leisure continues to grow, with hotels reporting unprecedented numbers of overnight stays last winter.According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the country recorded 18.5 million overnight hotel stays, marking a 2.8% increase year-over-year and the highest figure ever for this period. This surge highlights the strength of the Swiss tourism industry.
While Swiss nationals accounted for a important portion of these stays, international visitors also played a crucial role. German tourists led the pack among foreign visitors, registering 708,738 hotel stays between November 2024 and April 2025. This represents a 5.1% increase compared to the previous year, likely due to Germany’s proximity and shared language with parts of Switzerland.
foreign demand rose by 5.5% to 9.2 million overnight stays, the highest level as the 2007/2008 winter season. Stays by Swiss nationals also reached a new record, increasing by 0.2% to 9.3 million. The United States emerged as the second-largest source of international visitors, with 522,134 hotel registrations, a substantial 13.2% increase that made Americans the biggest contributors to the overall rise in foreign visitors, further boosting Switzerland tourism.
Following the U.S., France recorded 382,705 hotel registrations (up 6.4%), the United Kingdom 323,748 (up 0.9%), and Italy 236,795 (up 2.6%). China saw 155,223 hotel registrations,a modest 1.8% increase, but still below pre-pandemic levels, according to the FSO. Rounding out the top ten were the Netherlands (114,095, up 2.3%), Spain (112,232, up 5.4%), and the Gulf States (103,853, up 3.7%).
In contrast, Belarus and Iceland recorded the fewest hotel registrations, with fewer than 2,000 each, suggesting less interest in visiting Switzerland among these nationalities.
What’s next
With the record-breaking winter season behind them, Swiss tourism officials are looking to sustain this momentum through targeted marketing campaigns and infrastructure improvements. They aim to attract even more visitors and further solidify Switzerland’s position as a premier global destination.
