Sword Health Secures $40M, Launches AI Mental Health Solution
Updated June 20, 2025
Sword Health, a digital musculoskeletal company, announced Tuesday it has obtained $40 million in funding. The New York City-based company will use the capital to launch Mind, a new mental health solution leveraging artificial intelligence and licensed clinicians to provide complete care.
Sword Health utilizes AI to address musculoskeletal issues, offering digital physical therapy, education, and specialist support. The company serves both employers and health plans, and the new funding, led by General Catalyst, brings its total raised to $300 million, valuing the company at $4 billion. The investment aims to accelerate mergers and acquisitions, support global expansion, and broaden the scope of care offered.
Chris Bischoff, managing director at General Catalyst and a Sword board director, said the company is reimagining healthcare by “fusing complex AI with human clinical expertise,” expanding access and improving outcomes.
Virgilio Bento, founder and CEO of sword Health, said the company is not planning an IPO in the near future. Rather, the focus remains on innovation and supporting members’ recovery through its AI care model.
The new mental health solution, Mind, provides 24/7 access to an AI therapist, Phoenix, and human mental health professionals. It also features the M-band,a wearable device that detects indicators of depression and anxiety, prompting clinicians to offer support. This approach aims to provide continuous support and remove barriers to access, shifting from reactive to proactive care for mental health.
“Traditional therapy, based on episodic 40-minute sessions frequently enough weeks apart, reflects a largely outdated and one-dimensional view that can’t keep up with the round-the-clock reality of mental health,” Bento said.
What’s next
Sword Health aims to leverage artificial intelligence to address various dimensions of healthcare, with the expansion into mental health marking a notable step in that direction. The company’s goal is to “heal the world across all dimensions in the healthcare world,” according to Bento.
