Sydney Boy Severely Injured in Shark Attack, Family Prepares for “Worst Possible Outcome”
The family of 12-year-old Nico antic is bracing for the “worst possible outcome” after he sustained devastating leg injuries in a shark attack at a Sydney beach on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
A fundraising campaign organized by a family friend, Victor Pineiro, has raised over AU$120,000 (NZ$138,000) to assist the Antic family with expenses. The fundraiser was established following the attack, which left Nico fighting for his life.
This incident was the first of four shark bites reported in New South Wales within a 72-hour period, prompting widespread concern and the closure of numerous beaches. Multiple beaches were closed as a precaution.
“Despite all efforts, this heart-breaking event has led to the worst possible outcome,” pineiro stated.
Kate Barley, the mother of 15-year-old Khai Cowley who died in a shark attack off South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula in December 2023, offered her support to the Antic family. “From one mum to another, my heart is holding you so tightly,” Barley wrote. “I lost my beautiful boy Khai in a shark attack in SA… and I know how unbearable this waiting and fear can be.”
Four shark attacks occurred in 48 hours, leading to the beach closures.
