Sydney’s escalating gang violence has taken a disturbing turn, with police reporting that innocent families are now being targeted in retaliation for conflicts between rival criminal syndicates. The violence, which includes shootings and arson attacks, is linked to a feud involving the son of former NRL star Matt Utai, though authorities stress that those directly impacted are not involved in criminal activity.

The situation reached a critical point on February 17, 2026, when Matt Utai, a former Canterbury-Bankstown winger and 2004 NRL premiership winner, was shot multiple times outside his home in Greenacre. The 44-year-old remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder, listed in serious condition. Shortly after the shooting, police discovered the vehicle used in the attack ablaze in Wiley Park.

According to Detective Acting Superintendent Brad Abdy, the subsequent incidents – a shooting at a home in St Clair and an arson attack in Guildford West, both occurring on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 – are connected to Iziah Utai, Matt Utai’s son. Iziah Utai is believed to be overseas and has links to “criminal entities.”

“Criminals throughout history have been known to retaliate against other rival gangs. It’s not a new occurrence,” Superintendent Abdy stated. However, he emphasized the particularly troubling nature of the current escalation. “The escalation appears to be targeting innocent members of particular families. It’s ridiculously disgusting offences they are committing.”

The targeting of family members represents a dangerous shift in tactics, according to police. “These people are ordinarily innocent people that are now being targeted by violent criminal syndicates, and they have no association with the criminality of the people in their particular families or their particular associates.”

Evidence of the escalating conflict has surfaced online, with videos circulating on social media appearing to show perpetrators taunting Iziah Utai before carrying out attacks. One video depicts individuals firing shots into a home while making threats directed at the “Coconut Cartel,” a self-proclaimed criminal group. Another video shows a house engulfed in flames, accompanied by a voice declaring, “This is the start of the destruction, brother.”

Superintendent Abdy identified the “Coconut Cartel” as a “crime-for-hire” organization involved in offenses across Sydney. The group has reportedly declared a war on a rival syndicate, escalating the already volatile situation.

The incidents began unfolding around 12:45 AM on Wednesday, when officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence in St Clair. A woman in her 50s was inside the home at the time but was unharmed. Shortly afterward, a car was found burning on Freeman Street in Colyton and was taken into police custody for forensic analysis.

Later that day, emergency services were dispatched to Hunt Street in Guildford West following reports of a fire at approximately 6:45 AM. Both a house and a vehicle were found ablaze, with no injuries reported.

In response to the escalating violence, the NSW Police Raptor Squad has established Strike Force Halesowen to investigate the incidents, including the shooting of Matt Utai. Approximately 100 investigators have been assigned to the task force, and increased police patrols have been deployed throughout western Sydney.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the conflict and bring those responsible to justice. The focus remains on protecting innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of this increasingly dangerous gang war.
