The Dodgers faced the Detroit Tigers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday. The starting lineup featured Edman at second base, Michael Conforto in left field, Andy Pages in center field, and Austin Barnes behind the plate. Hernandez was not included.
hernandez, known as “Kike” to fans, is valued for his versatility, playing multiple positions in both the infield and outfield. He has a career batting average of.233 with 121 home runs, 438 RBIs, 486 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases over 1,185 games.
kim Hye-sung, who signed a 3+2 year, $22 million contract with the Dodgers this past winter, plays a similar role to Hernandez. In 953 career games, Kim has a .270 batting average with 37 home runs and 386 RBIs. He began the season with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Baseball Club, batting .207 (6-for-29) with one home run, three RBIs, six runs, and two stolen bases, posting a .613 OPS.
If Hernandez’s performance doesn’t improve, Kim could be a candidate for a call-up.Hernandez has reportedly been struggling recently, leading to his benching. The Dodgers previously dealt with similar issues during the Tokyo series, when Mookie Betts lost approximately 18 pounds due to vomiting.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Hernandez’s symptoms are different from Betts’ situation. Though, the fact that Hernandez has been out of the lineup for two consecutive games suggests the issue might potentially be more significant than initially believed.
Kim Hye-sung is slated to play in the opening game of the Triple-A season for Oklahoma City. It remains to be seen whether he will get his major league debut sooner than anticipated.
