Synology released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, updating its data protection appliances with expanded cloud recovery options, cross-platform workload support, and automated artificial intelligence threat detection. The latest firmware update extends backup and recovery coverage across major cloud infrastructure, virtualization layers, and software-as-a-service applications. Organizations can now protect and recover workloads running on Azure Virtual Machines, Amazon EC2, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, and Google Workspace.
Expanding Cross-Platform Recovery and Cloud Storage Options
ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 gives IT teams the ability to restore virtual machine instances across different platforms to either cloud or on-premises environments. This cross-platform capability allows administrators to recover a virtual machine from VMware to Proxmox, or restore data from object storage directly into Microsoft Azure. To streamline offsite backup strategies, Synology added Azure Blob Storage as a dedicated backup copy and tiering destination. This option joins existing supported repositories such as ActiveProtect appliances, Synology NAS, Synology C2, Amazon S3, Wasabi, and other S3-compatible storage tiers. By supporting cloud-to-cloud restoration directly to production virtual machine environments, the platform aims to reduce recovery times during a disaster scenario.
Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into Threat Detection
The software update incorporates machine learning and artificial intelligence models to spot anomalous backup behavior earlier in the data lifecycle. The system introduces automated malware scanning and fallback mechanisms designed to prevent organizations from restoring compromised backup versions. Synology Chairman and CEO Philip Wong stated in the announcement coverage that artificial intelligence has accelerated cyber threats to a pace organizations struggle to outmatch.
