Drone Strike Kills Kurdish Family in Syria, Rights Group Says
Updated May 29, 2025
A March drone strike in northern syria killed 10 members of a Kurdish family, including seven children, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported. The drone strike, which occurred near kobane, raises concerns about potential violations of international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians in ongoing conflicts.
The attack, which HRW attributes to either Turkish forces or Turkish-backed Syrian factions, hit a farm where the family lived. According to HRW, the strike killed Othman abdo, 44; Ghazala Usman Abdo, 41; thier 18-year-old daughter, Ronida; and their children Ahin, Dijla, Dlovan, Yasser, saleha, Fawaz and Avista. Only one child, 9-year-old Nareen, survived with injuries.
Adam coogle, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, emphasized the need for thorough investigation. “Even if a military target was nearby, the forces responsible should have done all they could to minimize civilian harm,” Coogle said. ”Given the devastating toll on one family,it appears the attackers did not take sufficient measures to spare civilians.”
HRW’s investigation included interviews with the farm owner, neighbors, and a local activist, as well as analysis of photos and videos from the scene. The evidence suggests the munition used was a Turkish-made MAM-L laser-guided bomb, commonly deployed by drones.
The incident occurred in an area near the front lines with territory formerly held by Turkish-backed factions. While a recent agreement aimed to integrate Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syrian state institutions, hostilities continue to endanger civilians.
“Türkiye and Syrian transitional authorities should conduct impartial, thorough, and transparent investigations into the attack,” Coogle said. “They should compensate victims of any unlawful strikes and take all feasible measures to minimize civilian casualties.”
What’s next
Human Rights watch is urging both Turkish and Syrian authorities to conduct impartial investigations into the drone strike, compensate victims, and take measures to prevent future civilian casualties. The organization also calls on the Syrian government to unify its military under accountable command and ensure adherence to international humanitarian law to protect Kurdish and other northern Syrian residents from further violations. The Kurdish family tragedy underscores the urgent need for accountability and civilian protection in the region.
