Deadly clashes Erupt in Syria as Security Forces Target Former Regime Official

Tartus, Syria – A fierce firefight erupted in Syria’s Tartus governorate on wednesday, leaving at least 17 people dead, including six security personnel. The clashes, which involved armed men and Syrian security forces, centered around the attempted arrest of a former military officer linked too the notorious Saidnaya prison. The violence began when security forces attempted to apprehend the former officer, who held a senior position in the military justice system under former President Bashar al-Assad. The officer was reportedly responsible for imposing death sentences and arbitrary punishments on thousands of prisoners, including those held at Saidnaya prison, known for its brutal conditions and human rights abuses.

According to residents of Khirbet al-Muizzah village, security forces attempted to search their homes, sparking resistance. The former officer’s brother and armed supporters then confronted the patrol, forcing them to retreat. An ambush was set up near the village, resulting in the deaths of six security personnel and injuries to others.

In response, security forces surrounded Khirbet al-Muizzah, arresting dozens of villagers and transporting them to a security center.

A hayat Tahrir al-Sham official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the clashes, stating they involved “remnants of the ousted criminal regime” and Syrian security forces in Tartus.
