Syrian Artist Suzanne Najm al-Din Speaks Out Against Assad’s Crimes
Damascus, Syria - Renowned Syrian artist Suzanne Najm al-Din fought back tears as she recounted the horrors of Saidnaya prison, a notorious detention center in the Damascus countryside, during a recent interview.
Speaking on Al Arabiya’s “Your interaction” program,Najm al-Din was asked directly: “Did Bashar al-Assad kill his peopel?” Her voice trembling with emotion,she responded,”What can I say after what I saw? Can I say because he disappeared or we have freedom,but we understand the terrible carnage he carried out in Saidnaya,which was unbelievable and heartbreaking.”
Najm al-Din, known for her powerful artistic expressions, didn’t mince words. “The amount of crimes he committed against prisoners inside and outside was unbelievable,” she stated. “We were all prisoners outside the prison, prisoners of thought and words.”
Her words paint a stark picture of the suffering endured by Syrians under the Assad regime. Najm al-Din lamented the loss of basic necessities, saying, “Our dreams are too small, and we have reached a point where the creative Syrian people who have a civilization and a history have lost gas, electricity, diesel and bread as a dream.”
Concluding her poignant testimony, Najm al-Din emphasized the shared suffering of the Syrian people, stating, “Unluckily, in recent years, we have all been in the same trench, suffering.”
