Sweida, Syria – The southern Syrian city of Sweida is in the throes of a devastating conflict, with residents trapped in their homes, facing dire shortages and the constant threat of violence. A paramedic, speaking anonymously for his safety, described a harrowing scene of destruction and desperation, painting a grim picture of a city under siege.
A City Under Siege: Stories of Survival
“The whole family has been destroyed. I know of a family of four who where killed in their home,” the paramedic recounted, his voice heavy with despair. ”The bombing did not stop all night.”
The lack of basic necessities is palpable. “We have nothing left to eat in the refrigerator, just a few dry biscuits, and some fruits and vegetables that have rotted because the electricity has been out for 48 hours,” he added, his concern for his own family evident. “I have four children, but I don’t know how to protect them.”
The Paramedic’s Plight: A “Disaster Situation”
The hardest blow for the unnamed paramedic is his inability to fulfill his duties. “I received more than 50 calls for help,” he revealed, his worry extending to the “disaster situation” at the main hospital where he usually works. The breakdown of essential services and the overwhelming demand highlight the catastrophic impact of the ongoing violence.
Eyewitness Accounts of Escalating Violence
Correspondents on the ground have witnessed the brutal reality of the conflict. Men in Syrian Ministry of Defense uniforms were seen launching mortars and shouting “Allahu Akbar” near the bodies of fallen Druze fighters, while others conducted house-to-house searches. Another correspondent reported seeing approximately 30 bodies, a mix of government forces and fighters in civilian attire, lying on the ground, underscoring the widespread and indiscriminate nature of the fighting.
The Human Cost: hundreds Killed in Escalating Conflict
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that over 300 people have been killed since the fighting erupted on sunday. The conflict, initially a clash between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes, has drawn in the Syrian government and, according to claims, Israeli airstrikes in support of the Druze. The Observatory, which relies on a network of sources within Syria, states that the majority of casualties are militia members, but tragically, 40 civilians have also lost their lives, with 27 reportedly executed by security forces personnel. The syrian presidency has condemned the “heinous acts” and pledged to bring those responsible to justice. Though,a committee tasked with investigating a previous massacre in March has yet to release its findings, raising concerns about accountability and the ongoing impunity for such atrocities.
