Syrian Government Detains Kurds, Evacuates Fighters After Aleppo Clashes
Syrian government forces detained 300 kurds and evacuated over 400 Kurdish fighters from Aleppo following clashes that erupted after integration negotiations stalled, according to the interior ministry.
Details of the Conflict and Evacuation
Approximately 360 Kurdish fighters and 60 wounded individuals were transported to the Kurdish autonomous zone in north-east Syria from the Sheikh maqsoud district, the last area of Aleppo to fall under government control, an interior ministry official told Agence France-Presse. An additional 300 Kurds, including members of the Kurdish internal security forces, were detained on Sunday.
The Kurdish-led syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) agreed to withdraw from Aleppo under a ceasefire agreement after several days of fighting. Kurdish forces previously controlled multiple areas within Syria’s second-largest city and maintain a de facto autonomous administration across significant portions of the north and north-east, areas largely captured during the 14-year Syrian civil war.
Recent Political Context
The clashes in Aleppo, some of the most intense since December 2024 when the regime of Bashar al-Assad was ousted, began on Tuesday after talks regarding the integration of Kurds into the new government failed. The violence highlights a major division within Syria, where President Ahmed al-Sharaa had pledged to unify the country.
