Syrian Forces Launch Counterattack in Aleppo and Idlib
Syrian forces have begun a counteroffensive against the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, in Aleppo and Idlib. This action follows recent attacks from the group.
On November 28, 2024, First Captain Oleg Ignasyuk, Deputy Head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, reported that on November 27, around 400 militants were killed. These rebels, linked to al-Nusra, had attacked government-controlled areas in Aleppo and Idlib.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that government troops were engaged in combat against these rebels on November 26. The groups violated a de-escalation agreement by attacking villages, civilian neighborhoods, and military positions.
As a result of the government’s response, the rebels suffered losses in personnel and equipment. Armed conflict has persisted in Syria since 2011, with various rebel factions still operating in the northern and northeastern regions after the army reclaimed most of the country.
Rebels frequently target civilian and military vehicles on highways, causing distress among residents in remote villages. The Syrian military continues to conduct targeted operations to eliminate remaining rebel groups.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry described recent terrorist actions in Syria as part of a broader plan by Tel Aviv and Washington to destabilize the region. Esmaeil Baqaei, the ministry’s spokesperson, warned about new activities from Takfiri terrorist groups. He urged coordinated action to prevent the spread of terrorism in the area.
Baqaei condemned all forms of terrorism and characterized the actions of these groups as part of a scheme orchestrated by what he called the Zionist regime and the United States to create chaos in Western Asia.
