Damascus, Syria – In a dramatic shift of power, SyriaS newly formed opposition government announced a three-month suspension of teh country’s constitution and parliament. The move comes after opposition forces, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, seized control of Damascus and declared the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Obaida Arnauts, spokesperson for the new government, told reporters that a committee focused on legal affairs and human rights will review the existing constitution and propose amendments. The current constitution, adopted in 2012, does not declare Islam as the state religion.
“This transitional period will last three months,” Arnauts stated, emphasizing the government’s priority of “preserving and protecting institutions.” He added that meetings between ministers from the Salvation Government, which previously controlled northwestern Syria, and former officials from Assad’s administration will take place to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
the opposition has appointed Mohammed al-Bahir as the head of the transitional government until March 1st. Al-Bahir previously led the Salvation Government.
Arnauts promised a commitment to the rule of law, stating that “all those who have committed crimes against the Syrian people will be brought to justice.” He also assured the public that religious and personal freedoms would be respected, emphasizing Syria’s diverse religious and cultural landscape.
