Syria Forms Transitional Government, Prime Minister Expected to be Named
Damascus – Syria is taking its first steps towards a new era with teh formation of a transitional government. mohammed al-Bashir is expected to be named Prime Minister, tasked with leading the contry through this critical period.
Al Jazeera reports that al-Bashir will be responsible for assembling a new cabinet to manage the transition. This comes as the powerful HTS (Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham) militant group has hinted at its intention to take control of the transitional government, though no specific timeline has been announced.
“Our forces will soon complete control over the capital adn safeguard public property, and the new government will begin its work immediately after its formation,” a statement from the opposition group’s military operations center read on its Telegram channel.
Meanwhile, outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali, who remains in office to oversee government functions until the transition is complete, stated that most cabinet ministers are still working from their offices in Damascus.
“We are working to ensure a swift and smooth transition,” al-Jalali told Sky News Arabia TV. He also noted an improvement in the security situation compared to previous days.
On Sunday, al-Jalali affirmed the government’s readiness to hand over power to whomever the Syrian people choose as their leader.
“I will not resign,and I have no intention of resigning. I hope to guarantee the continuity of public authority, institutions, and state apparatus peacefully, as well as ensure the safety and security of all citizens,” he saeid in a video statement.
