System of a Down‘s Shavo Odadjian on Stadium Shows, Band Dynamics, and Future Plans
Shavo Odadjian, bassist of the iconic rock band System of a Down, recently opened up about their upcoming North American stadium shows and the band’s future plans in an interview on SiriusXM’s "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk."
The band, known for their provocative lyrics and heavy sound, will kick off their 2025 North American tour with massive stadium events in three cities. The run begins at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on August 27-28, featuring special guests Korn, followed by two nights at Soldier Field in Chicago (August 31-September 1) with Avenged Sevenfold, and wrapping up at Rogers Centre in Toronto on September 3 and September 5 with Deftones.
Odadjian was surprised but delighted by the swift sell-out of these shows. "It floored me," he admitted, still grappling with the idea of System of a Down as a stadium-filling band. "We hadn’t played together a lot in recent years, so adding more shows seemed like a natural progression."
When asked why the band is only playing in three cities this time, Odadjian revealed that they wanted to test the waters before committing to a full-scale tour. "We’ve been doing one or two shows a year since 2017, so our relationships weren’t as strong," he explained. "Now that everyone’s on the same page, we decided to play some shows and see how we feel. There’s no strategy or plan beyond that."
The bassist also shared why they chose these specific cities. "We haven’t been to the East Coast in a while, and we wanted to make it up to our fans there," Odadjian said. "We love all over, but we haven’t shown it enough to the East Coast lately."
Odadjian was nonchalant about the challenge of ramping up for six shows after years of playing fewer performances. "We can do it," he stated. "We’re not gonna push ourselves too hard. We’ll rehearse, have fun, and see how it goes."
Last May, vocalist Serj Tankian spoke about his past reluctance to embrace the touring lifestyle. "I took a hiatus to do my own thing and have a life," he said in an interview with Soul Boom With Rainn Wilson. "Tours can be redundant and creatively stifling after a while."
Tankian also addressed his evolving relationship with guitarist Daron Malakian in an interview with CBC Radio One’s "Q." He noted that their creative differences stemmed from their respective artistic growth and changing dynamics within the band.
As for System of a Down’s future plans, Odadjian was vague but positive. "There’s no heavy responsibility on anyone," he said. "We’ll see how we feel after these shows. If we wanna do more, we will. If not, we won’t."
In the meantime, the band is set to play a run of South American stadium gigs this spring, marking their first visit to the region since 2015.
With their upcoming stadium shows and apparent band harmony, System of a Down fans can hope for more music and tours from the progressive metal legends.
Odadjian’s insights paint a picture of a band energized and committed to delivering explosive live experiences for their fans. These stadium shows promise to be monumental events, showcasing System of a Down’s enduring musical power alongside an extraordinary lineup of fellow heavyweights. While their future plans remain shrouded in some mystery, the palpable excitement surrounding these upcoming concerts suggests that the Armenian-American quartet’s legacy will continue to reverberate for years to come. As Odadjian aptly stated, System of a Down’s journey is far from over, leaving fans eager to witness the next chapter unfold.
System of a Down’s triumphant return to the stage is a testament to thier enduring legacy and powerful impact on the music world. These highly anticipated stadium shows, while limited in scope, signal a promising chapter in the band’s future. With their revitalized creative energy and the undeniable fan fervor that sold out these concerts in record time, it’s clear that System of a Down is more than ready to unleash their unique brand of sonic rebellion upon the world, one stadium at a time. The 2025 tour promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans, marking a pivotal moment in the band’s ongoing journey.
