TJ Oshie Announces Retirement after 16-Year NHL Career
Updated June 10, 2025
TJ Oshie, the Washington Capitals forward and Stanley Cup winner, has announced his retirement from the NHL after 16 seasons. The 38-year-old Oshie, a key player for the Capitals, missed the 2024-25 season as of a back injury, which ultimately led to his decision.
Oshie, reflecting on his career, stated, “To my family, friends, coaches, trainers, teammates, fans and to the game of hockey, I promise you this, from the moment my skates touched the ice, I gave you everything I had. With that … I’d like to officially announce my retirement.”
Before joining the Capitals, Oshie gained international fame at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. His performance in a preliminary-round shootout against Russia, where he scored on four of six attempts, secured a 3-2 victory for the United States.
The rules allowed the Americans to repeatedly use Oshie in the shootout. Than with the St.Louis Blues, Oshie delivered the game-winning goal, though the U.S. team did not ultimately medal.
The Capitals acquired Oshie in 2015, and he quickly became a vital part of their core. After scoring 59 goals in his first two seasons, he signed an eight-year, $46 million contract in 2017 to remain in Washington.
Oshie played a crucial role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley cup victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. During that playoff run, he recorded 21 points in 24 games, including six points in the Final.
Throughout his NHL career, Oshie played 1,010 games with the Blues and Capitals, amassing 302 goals and 393 assists.
