TJ Oshie, the Washington Capitals forward and ⁢Stanley Cup winner, has announced his retirement from the ‍NHL after 16 seasons. The 38-year-old Oshie, a key player for the Capitals, missed the 2024-25⁢ season as of a back injury,‍ which ⁢ultimately led to his decision.

Oshie, reflecting on his career, ⁢stated, “To my family, friends, coaches, trainers, teammates, ⁤fans and to the game of hockey, I promise you this, ⁢from the moment my skates touched ⁣the ice, I ⁢gave you everything I had. ‍With that … I’d ‍like to officially ⁤announce my retirement.”

Before joining the Capitals, Oshie gained international fame at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. His performance in a preliminary-round shootout against Russia, where he scored on four of⁤ six attempts, secured a 3-2 victory for the United States.

The ⁢rules allowed the ⁢Americans‍ to repeatedly⁤ use Oshie in the shootout. Than with the St.Louis Blues, Oshie delivered the game-winning goal, though the U.S. team did not ultimately ‍medal.

The Capitals⁣ acquired Oshie⁤ in 2015, and he quickly became a vital part of their core. After scoring 59 goals in his first two ⁤seasons,⁤ he signed an eight-year, $46 million contract in 2017 ⁢to remain in Washington.

Oshie⁣ played⁢ a ⁢crucial role‍ in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley cup ‍victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. During that playoff run, he recorded 21‍ points ⁢in 24 games, including six points in the Final.
