T-Mobile, Verizon vie for 5G Dominance Amid Coverage Concerns
Updated June 27, 2025
T-Mobile’s aggressive marketing strategy, spearheaded by its CEO as of June 2025, risks alienating potential customers, especially those already with Verizon. According to Recon Analytics founder Roger Entner, those receptive to T-Mobile’s message have likely heard it already, while others may be turned off by the implication they made a poor choice.
Entner said, “The customers who are receptive to the [network] message have already heard it. Then there’s the segment that tunes this entirely out. People who are with their carrier for a long time are not receptive to it and the more you hammer it, the worse it actually gets.”
Customers frequently enough select carriers based on the best service in their specific area. Overtly critical marketing can drive customers to cling more tightly to their current providers, such as AT&T or Verizon.
T-Mobile’s acquisition of spectrum has bolstered its position in 5G, leading in several network metrics. However, verizon’s extensive 4G LTE network may still provide better coverage in rural areas. T-Mobile’s President of Technology Ulf Ewaldsson acknowledged that their coverage isn’t universal, leading to roaming agreements with other companies. He maintains that, T-Mobile’s coverage is comparable to Verizon’s.
T-Mobile’s President of Marketing, Strategy and Products Mike Katz noted that Verizon also faces coverage gaps. T-Mobile plans to launch its T-Satellite service commercially on July 23, aiming to reduce terrestrial dead zones through satellite-powered communication.
Both T-Mobile and Verizon are actively working to enhance their public image. While the two giants compete, smaller rivals are quietly attracting customers.
