T20 WC 2026: Sanju Samson Key to India’s Final Against New Zealand in Ahmedabad

T20 WC 2026: Sanju Samson Key to India’s Final Against New Zealand in Ahmedabad

March 7, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Ahmedabad is set to host the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup on Sunday, pitting India against New Zealand in a highly anticipated clash. Both teams have demonstrated considerable strength throughout the tournament, with New Zealand dismantling South Africa to secure their place in the final, while India overcame a stern test from England.

Several factors favor India heading into the match. However, New Zealand boasts a strong record in ICC knockout games, a historical trend that cannot be ignored. India has lost all three of their previous T20 World Cup encounters against New Zealand, a statistic that understandably raises concerns. A single misstep could prove decisive.

Former Indian spinner and coach Anil Kumble has highlighted the pivotal role of Sanju Samson’s performance in the powerplay as a key determinant of the match’s outcome. Kumble believes Samson’s ability to effectively counter New Zealand’s bowling attack, particularly the potential strategies involving Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner, will be crucial.

“New Zealand will likely employ a strategy utilizing both Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner,” Kumble stated. “With Abhishek Sharma unavailable, the presence of an off-spinner like Santner becomes a possibility. Santner is bowling very well currently. Henry’s bowling is well known – he will aim to bowl with excellent length from the outset. However, it won’t be easy against Samson. He understands the bowler’s length very well and can clear the boundary with consistency when the length changes. Samson has the ability to do this consistently. The contest between Sanju Samson and Matt Henry will be very crucial.”

Samson has been in excellent form throughout the tournament, earning two Player of the Match awards. He scored a match-winning 97 against the West Indies in the Super 8s and followed that up with an impressive 89 against England in the semi-final. However, his previous record against New Zealand is less convincing, with struggles in their recent bilateral series.

The Indian team will be relying heavily on Samson to replicate his recent form. While he was on the verge of a century against England, prioritizing the team’s needs led to his dismissal. Despite this, his contribution of 89 runs was instrumental in securing India’s place in the final. The availability of Abhishek Sharma remains uncertain, making Samson’s role at the top of the order even more critical.

The pitch at Ahmedabad is expected to favor batsmen, suggesting a high-scoring contest. The team winning the toss may opt to bat first, as historical data indicates a higher probability of success for teams batting first at this venue. This makes the toss a potentially significant factor in the outcome of the match.

Varun Chakaravarthy, India’s leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps, will also need to be at his best. While he has been effective, maintaining consistency will be vital against a strong New Zealand batting lineup.

India will need a complete performance to overcome New Zealand’s challenge. The team’s ability to handle pressure and execute their strategies effectively will be paramount. New Zealand, known for their composure in high-stakes matches, will pose a formidable test. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams vying for the coveted T20 World Cup title.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav have also been key contributors to India’s batting lineup, scoring 263 and 242 runs respectively. However, all eyes will be on Samson, given his recent form and the potential impact he can have on the game.

The stakes are high as India aims to defend their title and secure their second consecutive T20 World Cup victory. The team will need to draw upon their collective strength and experience to overcome the challenges posed by New Zealand and emerge victorious.
