Pallekele, Sri Lanka – The Australian men’s T20 World Cup campaign has been thrown a lifeline with the official inclusion of Steve Smith in the squad, replacing the injured Josh Hazlewood. However, Smith’s immediate playing status remains uncertain as fellow batsmen Mitch Marsh and Marcus Stoinis demonstrate positive recovery from their own respective injuries.

Smith was flown into the tournament following a testicular injury sustained by captain Mitch Marsh during preparations for Australia’s opening match against Ireland. The injury, described as testicular bleeding after a blow to the groin, initially cast doubt on Marsh’s participation in the early stages of the World Cup. Smith arrived in time to join the team in Pallekele, where they are scheduled to play their final two group matches.

Despite arriving and participating in training on Sunday, it remains to be seen whether Smith will feature in Tuesday’s crucial match against Sri Lanka. Selector Tony Dodemaide emphasized the need to activate Smith given the uncertainty surrounding both Marsh and Stoinis. “ICC regulations stipulate any squad change must be submitted and activated at least one day prior to a match,” Dodemaide stated. “With Steve here, along with some uncertainty around Mitch and Marcus Stoinis, it made sense he [Smith] is activated and available for selection in time for the match, if required.”

Hazlewood’s absence was known prior to the tournament’s commencement, stemming from an Achilles problem that arose during his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered during the Ashes series. Australia’s selectors initially delayed naming a replacement, opting to wait and assess the situation as it unfolded.

The timing of Smith’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy given his recent form. While he last played a T20 International for Australia in February 2024, Smith showcased exceptional batting prowess in the recent Big Bash League (BBL), amassing 299 runs at an average of 59.80 with a striking rate of 167.97. This performance fueled calls for his inclusion in the World Cup squad, though selectors initially resisted, preferring to bring in Matt Renshaw with a specific middle-order role in mind.

Looking at Smith’s overall T20 International record, he averages 24.86 with a strike rate of 125.45. However, his form in franchise and league cricket since his last appearance for Australia paints a more compelling picture: an average of 49.73 and a strike rate of 156.19, demonstrating a clear ability to adapt and excel in the shorter format.

Australia’s batting lineup has faced scrutiny early in the tournament. Travis Head has continued a lean run of form in T20 Internationals, while Cameron Green is under increasing pressure to deliver consistent performances. Glenn Maxwell, who struggled in the BBL, has yet to find his rhythm in Sri Lanka, adding to the concerns surrounding the team’s batting order.

Further compounding the issue, Josh Inglis has struggled to convert starts, with a top score of 42 in eight innings since the Ashes. Tim David, returning from a hamstring injury sustained on Boxing Day, also made a duck against Zimbabwe in his first outing.

The recovery of both Marsh and Stoinis offers a welcome boost to the Australian camp. Marsh underwent an extensive net session, indicating positive progress in his recovery. Stoinis has also been cleared of any serious injury after sustaining a blow to the hand during his follow-through against Zimbabwe.

Sean Abbott remains with the squad as a traveling reserve, providing additional depth but only becoming eligible for selection in the event of a further injury to another player. The situation highlights the challenges faced by Australia in navigating injuries and maintaining squad flexibility during the tournament.

The decision on whether to include Smith in the playing XI against Sri Lanka will likely hinge on a careful assessment of Marsh and Stoinis’ fitness levels during final training sessions. Australia’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament may well depend on finding the right balance and maximizing the potential of their available batting options.
