Tacos El Franc Opens First U.S. Restaurant in San Diego
Tacos El franc,a popular taquería hailing from Tijuana,has crossed the border to open its first U.S. restaurant.The grand opening took place Wednesday in San Diego, bringing authentic Tijuana tacos to a new audience.
roberto Kelly, a partner in the venture, expressed excitement about the expansion. “After many years of waiting, we’ve made our way across the border,” kelly said.
The new Tacos El Franc is situated in Westfield’s Plaza Bonita in National City, conveniently located next to Broken Yolk Cafe. The location boasts indoor seating,a bar,and two outdoor terraces.

National City was chosen strategically due to its proximity to the border and the ample space available. Kelly noted the abundance of parking as a significant advantage over their Tijuana locations.
Having been featured in the Michelin Guide in both 2024 and 2025, Kelly emphasized the commitment to maintaining the same flavors and quality that made Tacos El Franc a Tijuana institution. “We dedicated a couple of years to make sure that we could transfer the same taco. We wanted to be fair to our customers,” Kelly said.
Tacos El Franc’s journey began in 1974 as a humble taco stand in Tijuana, founded by javier Valdez. In 1996, they established a more permanent presence in Zona Río, Tijuana, which is the location most people associate with the taquería, according to Kelly.
