The Architect and His Process
For Tadao Ando, the renowned self-taught architect, drawing isn’t merely a step in the design process-it *is* the process of thinking. Known for his austere yet elegant concrete structures characterized by knife-sharp edges,Ando translates his concepts into reality using simple freehand pencil lines and energetic sketches often rendered in a single pastel color.
This artistic sensibility has been visible in previous monographs dedicated to ando’s work. His hand-drawings were recently exhibited this summer in “Youth” in his hometown of Osaka, and before that, in the comprehensive exhibition “Tadao Ando: Endeavors” at the National Art Center, Tokyo, in 2017.
A New Focus: “Sketches, Drawings & Architecture”
The recently published book, “Tadao Ando. Sketches, Drawings & Architecture,” published by Taschen last month, offers a unique perspective on Ando’s work. Unlike customary architectural monographs that showcase polished final products, this book centers exclusively on his rough sketches, drawings, plans, and photographs. It emphasizes the creative journey and underlying ideas, while simultaneously celebrating the increasingly rare art of hand-drawn architectural illustration.
The book represents a shift in how Ando’s work is presented, prioritizing process over presentation.
The Value of the Hand-drawn
At 84 years old, ando expresses a clear preference for the immediacy and authenticity of hand-drawn work. As he writes in the book’s foreword, exquisite computer-graphic expressions do not have sufficient strength to become the genesis of a new era.
He finds himself more drawn to the cobbled-together study models and rough line sketches that are generated in the process of struggling to arrive at thes shapes.
This sentiment reflects a broader concern about the potential loss of a vital skill and the unique insights it provides.
