A Full-Circle Moment: Returning to Sundance with “Third Act“
Table of Contents
For many filmmakers, the Sundance Film Festival represents more than just a premiere location; it’s a launchpad for careers, a crucible for creativity, and a community of passionate storytellers. For me, Sundance is deeply personal – a place woven into the fabric of my filmmaking journey and a poignant connection to my late father. the chance to premiere my new film, Third Act, at Sundance would be a dream realized, a full-circle moment honoring his legacy and our shared passion.
The Sundance Spark: Early Inspirations
My initial encounter with sundance wasn’t as a filmmaker, but as an inspired audience member. I first attended the festival in 2006, profoundly moved by Amandla!: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony. The film’s power resonated deeply, but it was the spontaneous eruption of song during the post-screening Q&A that truly captivated me. It wasn’t just a film screening; it was a collective experience, a demonstration of art’s ability to unite and uplift.
That feeling was further solidified by a serendipitous encounter. While waiting in a Burger King at the airport on my way back to Los Angeles, I spotted Lee Hirsch, the director of Amandla!. Nervously, I approached him to express my admiration. His genuine and gracious response – a “normal guy” enjoying a Whopper, just like me – was disarming and memorable. It cemented Sundance in my mind as a place where creativity thrived alongside genuine human connection. From that moment on, premiering a film at Sundance became a long-held aspiration.
Pivotal Moments and Profound Connections
In 2008, that aspiration began to materialize when my short film, Pilgrimage, premiered at Sundance. Filming Pilgrimage with my dad was a transformative experience, a deeply personal collaboration that forms a central narrative thread within Third Act. While the screening itself was exhilarating, another moment stands out vividly.
I attended the world premiere of Slingshot Hip Hop, a documentary showcasing the Palestinian hip-hop group DAM. The energy in the theater was electric, the emotion palpable. Witnessing DAM perform and sharing their story with the audience created a viewing experience unlike any other. It underscored what makes Sundance so special: it’s not simply about showcasing films, but about fostering profound connections between art, audiences, and the artists who create it. These connections are the heart of the festival’s magic.
Sundance Institute’s Invaluable Support
The Sundance Institute has been instrumental in bringing Third Act to fruition. The film received crucial support from the Documentary Film Program, and I was fortunate enough to participate in the sundance Asian American Fellowship. This support wasn’t merely logistical; it was invaluable on both a personal and professional level. Navigating the emotional complexities and creative challenges inherent in Third Act required guidance and encouragement, both of which the Institute generously provided. The workshops and mentorship opportunities offered through these programs were essential in shaping the film into its final form.
A Legacy of Filmmaking and a Full-Circle Moment
Sundance holds a unique place in my family’s filmmaking history. My dad premiered his last directed film at the festival in 2002. To now have the opportunity to premiere Third Act at Sundance feels like a powerful continuation of that legacy. It’s a chance to honor his memory, celebrate our shared passion, and contribute to the vibrant community that nurtured both of our creative journeys. It’s more than just a film festival; it’s a homecoming.
The first person I wanted to share the news with was my dad. When I called, he didn’t pick up, so I immediately dialed my mom. Her reaction was immediate and exuberant – a scream followed by,”Wait, let me put you on speaker phone so you can tell dad!” Unluckily, she accidentally hung up on me. After a frantic five minutes of redialing, and a slight dip in my excitement levels, I finally connected with my dad. His response? A simple, excited, “Alriiiight!” – a perfect encapsulation of his understated joy and unwavering support.
