Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG is set to compete in Paris-Roubaix on April 12, 2026, aiming to secure a victory that would establish a historic milestone in professional cycling. The world champion is pursuing a complete sweep of cycling’s five Monuments, a feat that would make him only the fourth man in history and the first non-Belgian to achieve the accomplishment.
Pogačar enters the race following a dominant start to the 2026 season. He has won all three of his appearances this year, claiming victories at Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, and the Tour of Flanders on April 5, 2026. His pursuit of the Monument sweep follows a victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège during the 2025 season.
If Pogačar wins on April 12, 2026, he will also become the first rider to win five of the most prestigious one-day races in a row, continuing a streak that began with his Liège-Bastogne-Liège win in 2025.
The Challenge of the Hell of the North
Despite his recent success, Paris-Roubaix is regarded by his own team as his ultimate test.
Pogačar previously debuted at the race in 2025, where he finished in second place. That performance was interrupted by a late crash, which saw him finish behind Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Premier Tech in the Velodrome.
Van der Poel enters the 2026 edition as the three-time defending champion. The rivalry between the two riders is central to the race’s narrative, as Pogačar attempts to conquer the brutal cobbles of northern France to complete his record-breaking run.
In preparation for the event, Pogačar conducted a recon ride on the Paris-Roubaix cobbles alongside teammate Florian Vermeersch to familiarize himself with the course conditions.
It’s no secret that Paris-Roubaix is one of the big goals for this part of the season. The few races I’ve done so far have gone perfectly so the motivation is high but the pressure is low.

Weather and Environmental Factors
The outcome of the race may be heavily influenced by the weather, which race director Thierry Gouvenou describes as a deciding factor for Paris-Roubaix. Forecasts for April 12, 2026, indicate cloudy and overcast skies with mild temperatures and light winds across northern France.
Significant rain is not expected, though there is a possibility of rain on the night of April 11, 2026. Fast and mostly dry conditions are generally expected to favor Pogačar, as dryer cobbles typically benefit riders with pure power and speed.
However, Gouvenou noted that certain conditions could still hinder the Slovenian rider, stating that with a headwind, he might find it harder to make a difference.
The race is known for its volatility, where chaos, crashes, and mayhem are common. These elements are typically exacerbated in wet and muddy conditions, though the 2026 forecast suggests conditions may be similar to those faced by the peloton in 2025, which were not as severe as the wettest editions, such as the 2021 race.
Due to the sensitivity of the race to weather, teams are closely monitoring forecasts to make final decisions regarding tire pressure and wheel choices before the start on Sunday.
