For over two decades, Danielle Pelland has been the name behind some of the most talked-about parties at the Sundance Film Festival. As founder of Brilliant Consulting, Pelland has produced over 323 events in Park City, Utah, over the past 21 years, becoming a crucial figure in the festival’s vibrant social scene. Her dedication to personalization and meticulous planning has earned her the trust of industry veterans and rising stars alike.

“Danielle is so great at planning festival parties — and many other events — because of her dedication to ensuring true personalization,” says Lynette Howell-Taylor, veteran producer and president of the Academy. “When she takes on an event for a film she wants to ensure that This proves a reflection of the work of the filmmaking team and adapts the environment to make that so. She is completely on top of everything in a way that has the client at ease for the whole night. Danielle is my first call every single time.”

Teddy Schwarzman of Black Bear Pictures has collaborated with Pelland for the last 15 years. “Danielle is without a doubt the hardest working person in show business. I don’t know how she does it,” Schwarzman stated. “She curates singular events across all budget ranges, is beyond creative, and makes sure filmmakers, talent and brands are taken care of. She does all the little things right.”

Indie film guru Cassian Elwes recalls first working with Pelland in 2009 on a party for the film Dirty Love. “Unlike most people doing events at the festivals she understands what makes a great party and who should and could be there to make it better,” Elwes said. “After that I wanted no one else working on my movies.”

David Hinojosa, who worked with Pelland at last month’s festival for an event following the world premiere of A24’s The Moment starring Charli xcx, emphasized Pelland’s ability to capture a film’s essence. “Danielle knows that the event following a world premiere is an extension of that film’s identity and vibe. Time and again she has brought that vision to life with impeccable execution, as well as a warmth that makes the celebration memorable for the film team.”

As Sundance prepares to move from Park City, Utah to Boulder, Colorado, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Pelland about her long history with the festival, the key ingredients for a successful Sundance party, and some of her most memorable experiences.

Pelland’s entry into the world of festival event production was somewhat serendipitous. Her first Sundance event, in 2005, was for Dirty Love, secured through a friend in the commodities trading business who was involved with the film. She raised approximately $80,000 in sponsorship money, with event costs totaling $25,000, realizing the potential for a business. Since then, she has consistently focused on curating sponsored events, building relationships with independent producers.

Over the years, Pelland has hosted a diverse range of memorable events. A karaoke party featured Elle Fanning and Peter Dinklage singing together. Performances have included John Legend for Monster, A$AP Rocky for Dope, MGK, Erykah Badu and Nas for The Land, and a particularly intimate performance by Selena Gomez, who performed for 75 people in a furniture store during a party for Rudderless.

Pelland attributes the success of her events to creating the right atmosphere, with a full premium bar, ample food, and sufficient capacity. She also highlighted the importance of collaboration with sponsors like Chase, who she says “respect what we’re trying to create together.”

She recalled a particularly challenging request for a party supporting Nick Jonas’s film Goat, where she coordinated with Craig’s restaurant to take over a Main Street location for catering. “Can you imagine trying to find a restaurant on Main Street during Sundance that would let us take over their restaurant so that Craig’s chefs could come in? It was not easy, but we found one and were able to flip this restaurant in one day so that Nick could have Craig’s there to cater the party for his movie.”

Pelland also emphasized the importance of identifying and working with breakout directors early in their careers, citing Ryan Coogler and his film Fruitvale Station as an example. “He really started at Sundance and now he’s a huge filmmaker. I remember that they were so humble and nice guys.”

This year, Pelland handled the CAA party, which was briefly disrupted by an incident involving Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost. Pelland stated that the situation was handled professionally, with security and Park City police responding swiftly, and that there was no fallout with CAA.

Managing the high demand for access to her events is a constant challenge. Pelland no longer works the door herself, acknowledging the difficulty of managing crowds and ensuring entry for those who need to be there. “Somehow we don’t hit capacity and everyone that needs to get in gets in somehow.”

Pelland noted a shift in the festival landscape over the years, with Sundance’s corporate development team working to strengthen relationships with official sponsors. She now primarily works with official festival partners, such as Chase and Acura.

Recent highlights include a pop-up celebrating the 20th anniversary of Little Miss Sunshine and a flash mob on Main Street for the anniversary of Napoleon Dynamite. She also highlighted a party for The Moment, sponsored by Poppi, and featuring DJs selected by Charli xcx.

Pelland’s experience extends beyond Sundance, with events held at festivals like Cannes. She recalled a particularly successful party for Splitsville last year, describing it as “the best party I’ve thrown in a long time,” with guests dancing on furniture and sparklers in champagne bottles.

As Sundance prepares for its move to Boulder, Pelland reflected on her 21 years in Park City, acknowledging the emotional weight of the transition. Despite the change, she plans to continue visiting Park City with her children for their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day ski trip.
