Taipei City Council members were intimidated: Taipei City Council | Chen Jianwei
Taipei to Screen Documentary on Organ Harvesting Amid Threats
A documentary titled “State-Owned Organs” highlights organ harvesting practices by the Chinese Communist Party. It has been shown in various venues across Taiwan. The Taipei City Council plans to screen this documentary on November 30, 2024.
Before the screening, City Councilor Hong Jianyi held a press conference on November 29. He announced that he received threats related to the broadcast, stating that some individuals threatened violence if the film airs. Hong Jianyi has reported these threats to the police.
Hong Jianyi underscored the Council’s commitment to transparency and broadcasting the documentary. He declared that threatening comments will not be tolerated in Taipei.
Police response has been organized. Zeng Yikun from the Taipei City Police stated that 43 officers will be present around the Parliament Building to ensure safety during the screening. In total, 51 officers will be deployed.
Other councilors also expressed their determination to protect Taiwan’s democracy. Councilor Chen Jianwei emphasized that intimidation tactics will fail, and the rule of law must prevail. Councilor Yan Ruofang warned the person behind the threats about the serious legal consequences.
Threats against the documentary are not isolated. The National Security Bureau reported 28 intimidation incidents so far this month, impacting cinemas, government institutions, and the legislature.
Guan Nongyun, a film industry leader, described the documentary as a strong condemnation of the CCP. Many regions in Taiwan, including Kaohsiung City and Changhua County, have also screened the film, showing concern for human rights.
Chiai County Mayor Weng Zhangliang supported the screening, and Hong Jianyi invited Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan to attend as well, aiming to ensure a safe environment for the event.
