Taipei Mayor Downplays Drama Surrounding Shanghai Forum,Emphasizes Cooperation
Taipei,Taiwan – Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an downplayed speculation surrounding the upcoming Taipei-Shanghai twin Cities Forum,stating that the event will proceed smoothly despite ongoing cross-strait tensions.
Speaking at the 2024 Taipei Youth Ideal Life Festival, Chiang addressed concerns about potential disruptions to the forum, which is scheduled to be held in Taipei this year.
“The Twin Cities Forum has a long-standing understanding,” Chiang said. “There won’t be many unexpected twists and turns.”
The forum, which has been held annually for 15 years, aims to foster cooperation and exchange between the two cities.This year’s theme, “Smart Governance for a Enduring Future,” reflects a shared commitment to addressing urban challenges.
Chiang emphasized that Taipei will uphold the principles of equality, dignity, goodwill, and reciprocity in hosting the event. He pointed to his own visit to Shanghai last year as an example of the successful implementation of thes principles.
When asked about the possibility of actors from the popular Chinese mainland drama “Celebrating More Than Years” attending the forum, Chiang said he had not received any confirmation but would ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
The mayor also addressed recent controversy surrounding a mainland Chinese student’s visit to a Taiwanese high school organized by the Ma Ying-jeou foundation. Chiang reiterated his support for Taiwanese youth and condemned any comments that demean women.
