Taiwan Tightens Export Controls on Huawei and ‌SMIC

Updated June 15, 2025

Taiwan has placed Huawei and SMIC, two key‍ companies in china’s push‌ for ⁤semiconductor self-sufficiency and AI ⁤supremacy, on⁢ its strategic high-tech commodities entity list. The action, taken saturday, requires the firms to obtain export permits from Taiwanese suppliers for any manufactured goods.

The Taiwan‍ Commerce ministry’s decision follows⁤ growing concerns about the potential ‌weaponizing of advanced technologies. ‍The ongoing trade war‌ has heightened scrutiny over the export⁤ of sensitive ⁢materials.

In November, the U.S. requested that TSMC, a major chip manufacturer, halt supplies of advanced chips to Chinese customers. TSMC also faced a fine for ⁤unknowingly supplying Huawei with compute ⁢chiplets for its Ascend 910-series AI processor.

The export restrictions extend beyond TSMC, impacting other Taiwanese semiconductor firms involved in materials and advanced packaging, including‌ UMC,⁢ ASE and GAME.

What’s next

The move is expected to further strain relations between China and Taiwan and coudl ⁣impact the global supply chain for semiconductors and AI technology. The long-term effects on China’s technological ambitions ⁤remain to be seen.
