Taiwan Steel Eagle: Taiwan Players’ Strength vs Japanese Pitchers’ Speed

Taiwan Steel Eagle: Taiwan Players’ Strength vs Japanese Pitchers’ Speed

May 6, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Taiwan Steel Eagles Tap Japanese Expertise to Enhance Player Performance

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan – The Taiwan⁢ Steel eagles professional baseball team is integrating Japanese coaching expertise to refine ⁤player performance,⁤ focusing on bridging the gap between physical strength and athletic execution. Li Longwen, a coach with over a decade of experience in japanese professional baseball⁢ and self-reliant leagues, joined the Eagles as Director of Physical Fitness in 2024 after guest guidance during the team’s 2023 autumn training.

Bridging the Strength-Speed⁢ Discrepancy

Li observed a key difference between Taiwanese and Japanese players. “Taiwanese players obviously have more muscle mass than Japanese players, but their ball ⁤speed⁤ and initial ‌batting speed are slower,” ⁣Li said. ⁢He believes this disparity warrants careful consideration and targeted training adjustments.

Adding to the Japanese influence, Ritou Furu, a pitching coach with experience with the Seibu Lions‌ and in the independent league, has also joined the Taiwan Steel ⁣Eagles. Furu’s arrival marks his first overseas coaching assignment.

Integrating Physicality and Technique

According to Li, the ultimate goal is to maximize athletic performance‍ by seamlessly integrating physical fitness with technical‍ skills. upon his initial arrival,⁤ Li noted a disconnect between ⁣these elements among the team’s⁣ newcomers, but he reports progress in this area.

“In‍ my ‍perception, the ultimate athletic performance will⁢ be expanded,” Li stated, emphasizing the importance‌ of translating physical capabilities into tangible on-field results.

Focus on Thoracic Spine Mobility

Li believes that ⁣pitchers, in particular, benefit from ‌improved mobility and flexibility in the thoracic spine. He suggests that Taiwanese players⁢ frequently enough⁢ prioritize increasing strength without adequately focusing on physical continuity. “Taiwanese players tend to find ways to increase⁢ their strength, but⁢ did not expect physical continuity,” he explained.

To illustrate, Li⁤ offered a comparative example: “If Taiwanese players have 100% strength, Japanese players are about 80%,⁣ but 70% of them can be used. Taiwanese players may only use 60% and cannot get close to the maximum.” He noted that kinetic ⁣efficiency has improved among Taiwanese players under his guidance since last year.

Li expressed surprise that Taiwanese players, ⁣despite their physical gifts, sometimes struggle to fully realise their potential, a phenomenon he ⁣has ‍observed particularly among pitchers.

The Importance of⁣ Offseason Training

Furu emphasized the critical role of offseason ⁤training in player development. He believes that players shoudl use ‍the offseason to address weaknesses identified during the season, formulating plans and implementing corrective measures.

Li⁣ admitted that his initial expectations regarding players’ self-care during breaks were not always met. “It’s as I didn’t educate myself well, and I ⁣still have to improve,” he said, acknowledging the need for ongoing education and reinforcement.

learning⁢ from Setbacks

Furu cited Seibu Lions players Shin Tatsuya and Hirama Hirara as examples of players who learned and improved through experience. He noted that Tatsuya Imai initially⁢ did little to improve during his first offseason. “I only knew to improve after failure, and slowly educate‌ him. Later (tatsuya Imai) he learned his own tricks and then ⁢changed,” Furu said.

Furu also pointed out that the physical management approaches differ between⁢ players who see regular playing time and those who do not. ⁣He suggested that competition is more intense in Japanese professional baseball, making it more challenging for players to admit discomfort. He recalled an instance where Hirama Hirara initially struggled with shoulder discomfort but ‌was motivated to overcome it after getting a chance to play in the top league.

Leveraging technology and‍ Repetition

Li highlighted the advancements in sports technology that allow for precise measurement of speed and axis. He emphasized‍ the importance ⁣of repetitive practice to master specific techniques. “In fact, you have to imitate one person and practice a lot.4 or 5,000 balls can you fully learn that ball. Physical training requires helping him have such physical strength and to bear the amount of training,” Li concluded.
