Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Visits Europe

Taiwan’s foreign minister, Lin Chia-lung, recently completed a weeklong trip to Europe. He met with European lawmakers in Brussels and promoted cooperation on drone technology with Lithuania.

Experts suggest this trip highlights Taiwan’s strategy to strengthen ties with European nations. Analysts note that Taiwan is focusing on practical cooperation instead of broader agreements. Zsuzsa Anna Ferenczy, an expert on EU-Taiwan relations, expressed that Taiwan’s approach can help create real examples of economic cooperation.

During his trip, Lin met members of the European Parliament and visited the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre, which specializes in nanoelectronics and digital technologies. Lin has emphasized economic and trade diplomacy since becoming Taiwan’s foreign minister.

Lin led a group of 20 Taiwanese drone companies to Lithuania, where they signed two agreements. These agreements aim to enhance collaboration in the drone industry. Building a domestic drone manufacturing sector is key for Taiwan to improve its defense capabilities amid increasing military pressure from China.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and seeks reunification. In September, Taiwan formed the Taiwan Excellence Drone International Business Opportunities Alliance, connecting over 50 domestic drone manufacturers with international partners, including an agreement with the Polish-Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Experts believe Lin’s trip could expand Taiwan’s economic cooperation with central and eastern European countries beyond semiconductors. Marcin Jerzewski of the European Values Center noted that emphasizing drone technology partnerships with Lithuania might align with these countries’ concerns, particularly in the context of supplies to Ukraine.

Despite Taiwan’s engagement efforts, Lithuania’s new government may reconsider its relations with China. Gintautas Paluckas, a leading candidate for prime minister, expressed a desire to “normalize” relations with China. Ferenczy indicated that Taiwan’s focus on economic ties might prevent potential backlash from China and benefit relations between Taiwan and Lithuania.

Strengthening bilateral relationships could help Taiwan’s overall standing with the European Union. Ferenczy stated that tangible cooperation might encourage EU member states to engage more openly with Taiwan.

Chinese officials oppose Taiwan’s interactions with countries that recognize Beijing. They insist that the EU respect the one-China principle.

Lin Chia-lung’s visit marks the third high-level Taiwanese delegation to Europe since President Lai Ching-te’s election in January. Jerzewski pointed out that Taiwan needs a clear strategy to manage relationships with Europe, which would help solidify its ties and enhance engagement with EU stakeholders.
