Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan Approves New Examination Yuan Leadership, Ke Liling Fails
Taiwan’s Examination Yuan Sees New Leadership, One Nominee Fails to Secure Approval
Taipei, Taiwan – In a closely watched vote, Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan approved most of President Lai qingde’s nominees for the Examination Yuan, the body responsible for civil service examinations and personnel management.
The vote, held this morning, saw Zhu Hongjian confirmed as the new Dean of the Examination Yuan, and Xu Shuqiang approved as vice President. Both nominees secured more than half of the votes cast.
Seven nominees where put forward for positions on the Examination Committee. Six were triumphant, including Deng Jiaqi, Ke Liling, Qi Wenyan, Lu Qihui, Wang Jiuhong, and Ivan Neville. However, Ke Liling, a former prosecutor and professor at National Chengchi University, failed to garner enough support, highlighting the sometimes contentious nature of these appointments.
The voting process was marked by intense scrutiny and debate. The Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) both expressed reservations about certain nominees, leading to a split vote.
“Our caucus unanimously recommended voting against Ke Liling and Ivan Neville,” stated Huang Guochang, Convener of the TPP Legislative Yuan Caucus. “We voted ‘no’ on those nominees while supporting the President, Vice President, and the other candidates.”
Adding to the drama, TPP lawmaker Huang Shanshan accidentally voted in favor of Ke Liling, despite intending to vote against her. Huang immediately reported the error but was unable to change his vote due to regulations.
The successful nominees will now take on the crucial task of overseeing Taiwan’s civil service system, a role that carries meaningful weight in ensuring a fair and meritocratic bureaucracy.
The examination Yuan plays a vital role in taiwan’s governance, responsible for recruiting and evaluating civil servants. The appointments to this body are closely watched as they reflect the political landscape and priorities of the ruling party.
