The oldest continuously-operating Red Lobster location in Tallahassee is closing permanently, ending a tenure that spanned 56 years. The restaurant, located on North Monroe Street, will serve its final meal on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The closure was confirmed by the store’s manager and employees on May 18, 2026. This decision comes as part of broader cost-cutting measures by the seafood chain, which has been reducing both its corporate staff and its number of restaurant locations.

A Half-Century of Operation

The North Monroe Street location opened in October 1970. At its inception, the restaurant was positioned to provide family priced seafood to the capital city in an environment designed to make customers feel at home.

Archived advertisements from the opening period highlight the pricing of the era, offering baked oysters, crabmeat, and baby shrimp for $1.85.

Corporate Financial Struggles and Restructuring

The Tallahassee location’s closure follows years of financial instability for the Red Lobster chain, which gained national attention in 2024 for its deep financial struggles. In an effort to stabilize the company, the chain underwent a significant restructuring process.

By September 2024, Red Lobster exited bankruptcy under a new operational plan. This transition included a $60 million investment from Fortress Investment Group, which was allocated across the 545 locations that remained in operation at that time.

As part of the company’s effort to shrink its footprint, 126 storefronts were closed nationwide in 2024. This included 17 locations within the state of Florida. While many sites were shuttered during that phase, the North Monroe Street location in Tallahassee was not included on the initial list of closures.

Recent Efforts and Final Closure

In an attempt to revitalize the Tallahassee location, the restaurant recently hosted a grand re-opening. This effort featured new menus that emphasized wild caught seafood flavors and included direct support from corporate staff to stabilize the operation.

Despite these localized attempts to maintain the landmark restaurant, the location is now being shut down as part of the company’s ongoing reduction of its operational footprint.

The restaurant will remain open until May 24, 2026, after which the North Monroe Street ovens will be turned off for the final time.
