Tamina Gorge Safety Upgrades Continue After Fatal Accident
Authorities are continuing to invest heavily in safety measures along the path to Tamina gorge, recognizing the inherent risks posed by the natural habitat.
The Tamina River flows powerfully on one side, while steep rock faces rise on the other. The idyllic path became the site of tragedy in August 2022 when a falling tree struck and killed a mother and her 6-year-old son.
“The accident is always present in our minds when we come here,” said urs kurath, the street inspector for the cantonal civil engineering office responsible for the region.
Kurath stated during a recent inspection with media representatives that his office’s employees check the road and existing protective structures three times per week.
Intensive Safety Work Underway Since 2010
The canton of St. Gallen has been investing in the safety of the road to the old Bad Pfäfers, the gateway to Tamina Gorge, for years, with efforts intensifying since the fatal accident.
The path serves as access for more than 63,000 visitors annually to the Tamina Gorge.
