Patrick Tam returns to Music After 18 Years: “I don’t Want to Be a Nostalgic Character”
Hong Kong, China – After nearly two decades away from the microphone, Hong Kong actor and former singer Patrick Tam has made a triumphant return to music with his new Taiwanese song, “Desperate Saburo.”
Tam, best known for his award-winning performances in films like “Beast Stalker” and the TV series “The World,” reminisced about his journey back to music in a recent interview with Thunder 881 Commercial Channel’s “Behind the Stars.”
“I always wanted to record a song, I always missed singing,” Tam confessed. “But because my acting career was going so well, I put my singing career on hold.”
While many of his contemporaries have embraced the wave of nostalgia sweeping through the music industry, Tam has chosen a different path. He declined multiple invitations to appear on the popular program “50 Years of Popular Classics,” explaining, ”I felt the show wasn’t right for me at the time. I was waiting for a new song before I wanted to step back on stage. I don’t want to be a nostalgic character.”
Tam’s new single, “Desperate Saburo,” wasn’t initially intended as a theme song. He stumbled upon the melody while visiting a musician’s recording studio and was immediately drawn to it.
“I liked the melody so much that I asked him to record it,” Tam shared. “I didn’t think about it being a theme song at the time. I just wanted to do a new song. Then I received the script for ‘Desperate Saburo’ and started to see the connection. The subject matter was very fitting, and I even convinced the director to get the lyricist involved.”
The song’s message resonates deeply with Tam’s own experiences.”The character in ‘Desperate Saburo’ is exactly what I want to bring to people,” he explained. “People have been glorious at a certain age, and now they have a reason to revive again.”
Tam’s return to music isn’t just about a single release. He hopes to continue recording new music and even dreams of holding his first solo concert.
His journey back to music is a testament to his enduring passion and a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.
tam’s career has been marked by both highs and lows. After achieving early success as a singer in the late 1980s,he transitioned to acting in the mid-1990s. He experienced a period of financial instability and self-doubt before finding his footing in the acting world.
“After winning the rookie award, things were fantastic,” Tam recalled. “I had a lot of fans, and a lot of things were happening. But I was too young and ignored relationships. None of my four albums were big hits. As income is very vital to me, I went nine months without income and still had to pay back money to my record label. So I was looking for a way out.”
He found that way out in acting, immersing himself in the craft and achieving critical acclaim. However,he acknowledges that the experience humbled him.
“I was addicted to acting at one point, thinking it might be my lifelong career,” Tam admitted. “I forgot there was a whole team following me, doing things for me. When I first started out, I had fans following me everywhere. I forgot those feelings, treated myself as a very ordinary person, and started over.”
Tam credits his wife, Fiona, for helping him find stability and balance. They met when he was 30 and married soon after.
“A man has to achieve some things before the age of 30, followed by getting married and starting a family,” Tam said. “Meeting my wife changed me a lot. being an actor, there’s no order, especially financially. I used to spend money randomly. Without my wife, I would have lost all the money I made. My wife and I couldn’t have done business together.I wasn’t mindful of what was happening in the world as I was used to living an artist’s life. She’s very down-to-earth, so there was friction at first. But she helped me plan, which made me care more about what was happening in the world and made my life more planned.”
