All Blacks defence coach Tana Umaga has stated that the team’s recent three-test losing streak against South Africa still sticks in the guts,
1News reported, as New Zealand prepares to face Australia in the Bledisloe Cup opener at Eden Park in Auckland.
Umaga Urges All Blacks to Rectify Recent Defeats
New Zealand enters the fixture following a 3-1 series loss to the Springboks on an arduous tour. Umaga, a former All Blacks captain who transitioned from coaching Moana Pasifika to join Dave Rennie’s new coaching staff, delivered a sharp presentation to the squad regarding the historical significance of the Bledisloe Cup. 1News reported that Umaga spoke to players about the heavy defeats at the end of their recent tour, stressing that those results must be immediately put right.
Set-Piece Focus And Disciplinary Adjustments
The All Blacks have spent their three-week break addressing vulnerabilities exposed during their matches against South Africa. Vaa’i told the NZ Herald that set-piece execution, winning the air, clinical finishing inside the 22-meter zone, and eliminating undisciplined penalties remain the squad’s primary areas of improvement. South Africa used their set-piece dominance to score 33, 29, and 43 points in their recent victories over New Zealand, prompting intense forward drills under Umaga's defensive guidance in Auckland.
Key focus this week is probably just around our set piece. That was a main thing that came out of the RGR and something that us forwards are working really hard on to perfect come weekend.

Wallabies Challenge Under Les Kiss
Coached by Les Kiss, the Wallabies arrive in Auckland having scored at least 26 points in all eight of their tests this year, including a 42-point performance in a win over South Africa in Perth. Umaga noted that Australia is playing with increased width and multiple attacking options across the field. New Zealand holds a formidable record at Eden Park, where they have won 25 consecutive tests against Australia since 1986 and have not lost to any international opponent at the venue since 1994, a run spanning 53 tests.

They’re playing with more width and having numbers across the field. You can see the stamp of Les Kiss on this Wallabies side. And you’ve got to think that’s a positive with the way they’ve been playing.
