Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated that the Russian ambassador to Ireland is not in a position to lecture the government over its stance on the Ukraine war. Martin’s remarks followed a diplomatic summoning of Ambassador Yuriy Filatov to the Department of Foreign Affairs over a recent drone incident in Germany, which the German government claims Russia was responsible for.

The diplomatic escalation began when the Russian embassy in Dublin accused the Irish State of engaging in anti-Russian propaganda. The embassy claimed Dublin was copy-pasting European Union conspiracy theories after Filatov met with foreign ministry officials.

The friction stems from an August 4th incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, where a drone carrying an explosive was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes. The German government asserts that Russia was responsible for the attack, though the bomb failed to detonate. Speaking to Newstalk’s Claire Byrne Show, Ambassador Filatov rejected any Russian connection to the event, dismissing German investigations as having very low credibility across Europe.

Taoiseach Rejects Embassy Accusations

During a school visit in Kinsale, Co Cork, Micheál Martin pushed back against the ambassador’s criticism. Martin maintained that Ireland’s foreign policy remains consistent and grounded in international law.

So many hundreds of thousands of young men and women have lost their lives on both sides. It is quite shocking the scale of this war and Russia bears responsibility for that, Martin said.

The Taoiseach added that Ireland continues to adhere to the United Nations Charter, emphasizing that no nation should violently violate the territorial integrity or sovereignty of another. He stressed that the most important contribution Russia could make now is to halt the war, declare a ceasefire, and facilitate negotiations.

Broader European Security Concerns

The public disagreement arrives shortly after European Union foreign ministers convened at the Druids Glen resort in Co Wicklow during Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. At the summit, ministers reaffirmed ongoing political, financial, and military backing for Ukraine.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee expressed solidarity with Germany and other member states targeted in recent security incidents. This is very clearly not just about the security of Ukraine, but of Europe as a whole, McEntee stated.

Relations between Dublin and the Russian embassy have grown increasingly strained in recent years. Ambassador Filatov, who took his post in 2017, previously clashed with Irish authorities over the expulsion of a Russian diplomat following a high-profile assassination attempt in Salisbury, England. Subsequent tensions arose when Russia banned 52 Irish politicians from entry due to their support for Ukraine, prompting Filatov to accuse the Irish government of running an aggressive anti-Russian campaign. In 2024, the ambassador also labeled Ireland’s participation in freezing Russian funds to aid Ukraine as criminal behavior.
