Tapper: Biden Cognitive Decline Cover-Up Worse than Watergate
Updated May 27, 2025
CNN anchor Jake Tapper, promoting his new book “original Sin,” recently asserted that the alleged cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline surpassed the Watergate scandal in severity. Tapper made the remarks during an interview with Piers Morgan.
Tapper argued that unlike Richard Nixon, who Tapper said was in control of his faculties when sober, biden exhibited routine signs of cognitive decline. These included forgetting names of aides and celebrity supporters, according to Tapper.
Tapper and co-author Alex Thompson have embarked on a media tour to discuss “original Sin,” which examines the alleged efforts to conceal Biden’s health issues during his presidency. The CNN anchor has pointed to several individuals, including former first lady Jill Biden, as playing key roles in maintaining the secrecy surrounding Biden’s health.
Tapper also suggested that hunter Biden had a vested interest in keeping his father’s health a secret, hoping to shield himself from a federal investigation. He said the best way to protect Hunter Biden was to keep the presidency.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last week, Tapper described “two Joe Bidens,” with the “non-functioning” version becoming increasingly apparent as his presidency progressed. He cited Biden’s performance against Donald Trump in June 2024 as a culmination of this decline, leading to biden’s withdrawal from the campaign shortly after.
Tapper has also acknowledged that the media, including himself, provided insufficient coverage of Biden’s health concerns. He said he apologized to Lara Trump for dismissing her claims in 2020 that Biden was showing signs of cognitive decline, admitting she “saw something that I did not see at the time.”
“The best way that they could protect [Hunter Biden] was to keep the presidency so that they could protect him,” Tapper said.
Tapper reiterated this sentiment to Morgan, acknowledging that many voters recognized Biden’s health decline, while he and others in the media did not.
What’s next
The release of Tapper’s book is highly likely to fuel further debate about Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities and the media’s role in covering the issue.
