North Carolina men’s basketball secured a significant recruiting coup on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as four-star wing Kevin Thomas committed to the Tar Heels just hours before the program hosted him at a campus visit. The announcement came via an Instagram post, marking Thomas’s second major commitment in as many weeks after he decommitted from LSU following the firing of head coach Matt McMahon.

The 6-foot-7 prospect, ranked No. 79 overall in the 2026 class by 247Sports, joins a Tar Heels recruiting class that already includes forward Maximo Adams, center Sayon Keita, and guard Malloy Smith. Thomas, who previously won three state championships at Weston Sagemont Prep—including two alongside incoming UNC guard Matt Able—is praised for his athleticism, perimeter scoring, and two-way potential. Former LSU coach McMahon described him as an “athletic 6-7 wing who will bring perimeter scoring and explosiveness,” noting his ability to shoot the three-ball and attack the rim.

Thomas’s decision to join UNC follows a competitive recruitment that also included interest from Auburn, Florida State, and Florida. His commitment adds depth to a Tar Heels roster under first-year head coach Michael Malone, who has quickly built momentum in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels are expected to host Thomas on Tuesday, May 14, alongside incoming transfer guard Matt Able, further solidifying the incoming class’s ties to the program.

Thomas’s arrival at UNC continues a trend of high-profile recruits opting for the Tar Heels amid a competitive ACC landscape. His skill set—highlighted by averages of 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game as a senior—positions him as a potential rotational player with upside for future development.

UNC’s recruiting success in the 2026 class underscores the program’s ability to attract talent despite recent roster turnover. With Thomas now committed, the Tar Heels have added four recruits in the class, including Adams, Keita, and Smith, signaling a rebuilding effort under Malone’s leadership.
