Tara Moore: 4-Year Doping Ban – Tennis News
Tara Moore’s Tennis Career Hit by CAS Upholding Doping Ban Over nandrolone
court of Arbitration for Sport Overturns “No Fault or Negligence” Ruling, Citing Insufficient Proof of Contaminated Meat
The tennis career of British player Tara Moore has been significantly impacted after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld an appeal by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), overturning a previous ruling that had cleared her of a doping violation. Moore was initially suspended in June 2022 due to the presence of prohibited anabolic steroids, nandrolone and boldenone, in a blood sample. While Moore maintained her innocence, asserting she had never knowingly taken a banned substance, an independent tribunal had initially steadfast that contaminated meat consumed in the days leading up to her sample collection was the source of the prohibited substances. This ruling lead to a 19-month period where Moore was cleared of the rule violation. However, the ITIA appealed this decision to CAS.
CAS ruling Casts Doubt on Contaminated Meat Defense
in a statement, CAS announced its decision, explaining that the majority of the panel, after reviewing scientific and legal evidence, concluded that Moore had not sufficiently proven that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat.
“The panel concluded that Ms Moore failed to establish that the ADRV [anti-doping rule violation] was not intentional,” the CAS statement read. “The appeal by the ITIA is therefore upheld and the decision rendered by the independent tribunal is set aside.”
This means Moore’s defense, which relied on the contaminated meat theory, was not deemed strong enough to absolve her of the violation. The ruling directly challenges the initial tribunal’s finding of “no fault or negligence” concerning the nandrolone detection.
Moore’s Reputation and Livelihood Affected by Prolonged Process
During her initial 19-month suspension, Moore had expressed that her reputation, ranking, and livelihood were ”slowly trickling away.” The 32-year-old player had also filed a cross-appeal at CAS, aiming to dismiss the ITIA’s appeal or have the nandrolone result removed from the anti-doping rule violation, or alternatively, to confirm she bore no fault or negligence.
Tho, CAS declared her cross-appeal inadmissible. Consequently, Moore’s four-year period of ineligibility will commence from Tuesday, with credit given for any provisional suspension already served.
ITIA Welcomes CAS Decision, cites Scientific Evidence
The ITIA’s chief executive, Karen Moorhouse, commented on the ruling, stating that the agency’s bar for appealing first-instance decisions is high and that such decisions are not taken lightly.
“In this case, our independent scientific advice was that the player did not adequately explain the high level of nandrolone present in their sample,” Moorhouse said. ”today’s ruling is consistent with this position.” This highlights the ITIA’s confidence in their scientific assessment of the nandrolone levels found in Moore’s sample.
Moore’s Tennis Standing and Past Achievements
Tara Moore is currently ranked 187th in the world in doubles and 864th in singles. Within Britain, she is ranked 11th in doubles and 27th in singles. Her recent career has seen her compete on the ITF World Tennis and WTA 125 tours, which are considered the levels below elite professional tennis.
Moore has a history of representing Great Britain as a former Billie Jean King cup team member. Notably, in february 2022, just five months before her provisional suspension, she achieved the distinction of becoming Britain’s No. 1-ranked women’s doubles player for the first time. She also participated in doubles at the Australian Open earlier this year, partnering with Austria’s Julia Grabher, but they were eliminated in the first round.
In a memorable moment from her career, Moore made headlines in 2019 for staging an astonishing comeback in a tournament in Sunderland. She rallied from a significant deficit of 0-6, 0-5, and facing match point at 30-40 down to defeat France’s Jessika Ponchet, a feat that was widely celebrated as a remarkable turnaround.
