Tariq Ramadan’s Acquittal Overturned in Swiss Appeals Court

A Swiss appeals court has overturned the acquittal of Tariq Ramadan, a prominent Islamic scholar and grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, on charges of raping and forcing a woman to have sex.

Ramadan, the grandson of Hassan al-Banna, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, has consistently denied allegations made against a Swiss woman in connection with a 2008 incident at a Geneva hotel.

The Geneva Criminal Court of Appeal has revoked Ramadan’s acquittal and sentenced him to three years in prison, with one year to be served. The ruling was made after the court reviewed numerous witness statements, witness documents, medical notes, and private expert opinions.

According to the local government in Geneva, the evidence presented in the case is consistent with the complainant’s statement. Ramadan has the option to appeal the ruling to a higher Swiss federal court.

The case has garnered significant attention due to Ramadan’s high profile and his connections to the Muslim Brotherhood. The outcome of the case is expected to have implications for Ramadan’s future and his reputation as a prominent Islamic scholar.
