Tasha Ghouri Discusses Engagement Plans, “Love Island,” and Disability Advocacy
Updated June 12, 2024
Tasha Ghouri, former “love Island” contestant, says she and boyfriend Andrew Le Page are taking their time when it comes to engagement. While frequently asked about their plans, Ghouri said an engagement is “more up to Andrew than it is to me.” She added that they are not in a rush to get married anytime soon, emphasizing their strong bond two years after meeting on the show.
Ghouri is still a “Love Island” viewer and is currently supporting Ayo and Mimii. She hopes they will reconcile, believing they share a special connection. She acknowledged Ayo’s connection with Uma but feels his deeper feelings lie with Mimii.
A vocal advocate for disability visibility, ghouri, who is deaf and wears a cochlear implant, would like to see more than one disabled contestant on “Love Island” in future seasons. She feels the show often includes only one disabled person to “tick off” a box. Ghouri suggests including multiple islanders with disabilities or introducing a bombshell with a prosthetic leg to showcase the beauty of disability.
Ghouri says representation is key to normalizing disabilities and demonstrating that people with disabilities can find love. She believes many TV shows fall short of true inclusivity by simply meeting a quota without genuinely integrating disabled individuals.
The reality star has also been campaigning for the normalization of deaf accents. She says she still receives negative comments about her voice on social media. Ghouri uses her platform to educate people about how her cochlear implant affects her speech.Rather than responding negatively, she aims to “kill them with kindness” and highlight the beauty of deaf accents.
“I feel like tasha today doesn’t care about what people think and has more confidence in herself. In this industry, you do have to be strong and ignore the negativity.”
As the general election approaches, Ghouri is advocating for media accessibility for the deaf community. She believes all content should include captions or subtitles, citing the lack of accessibility despite deafness being the third-largest disability in the UK. Ghouri says she feels disconnected from videos without subtitles and immediately scrolls past them.
What’s next
